I've installed these three packages on my Slackware 13.1 machine:

mlt-0.5.10-1-i686_MDG
kdenlive-0.7.8-1-i686_MDG
frei0r-20100913-1-i686_MDG

When I try to load clips, with every source file I try, I get the message:

Clip ##### is missing or invalid. Remove it from project?

I suspect a problem with ffmpeg.

I don't know if this is good or bad. Can anyone point me to a package which will allow me to install a good ffmpeg binary? Or instructions on how to build it from source?

Your ffmpeg is newer than the ffmpeg kdenlive was compiled with, that probably results eventually in this error.
Since ffmpeg was built static for this package this is pretty hard to work around.

However: I have not been idle these last few weeks and built all the dependencies as well as ffmpeg as shared libraries. That should prevent unwanted things like this to occur too often. As I am now working on getting the dependencies put nicely and decently in packages, you should be able to get a new build (or actually a set of packages) fairly soon.

As we're also anticipating Slackware 13.2 I am not 100% sure if I'll make it before that; if not: I'll rebuild all for Slack 13.2 and share that along.

Meanwhile, if you're impatient: you can try to build kdenlive with the ffmpeg you have installed at this moment. in /usr/doc/kdenlive*/ there should be an kdenlive.SlackBuild script that should allow you to build kdenlive. Might not 100% work out of the box though...

You may either want to open a new thread or find an existing Ubuntu thread that handles these errors. The packager should be able to help you out with the steps required to build a good working kdenlive on Ubuntu.

Anyway, there are various reasons that occur to me:
- motion.ogv might not be a valid ogv file; can you play it with ffplay, vlc, or whatever media player(s) you have about?
- access rights: is the file readable to the user that wants to open it? (who is the owner, what is the group and what do access bits say? (rw-rw-r--)?
- kdenlive might be missing a dependincy; or rather: probably ffmpeg; Did you update and install kdenlive and all it's dependencies? (mlt, ffmpeg, ... )
