FreeBSD ports now available

Wed Dec 24, 2008 9:06 am
here's a message for the multitude of FreeBSD users out there :) : MLT[++] and Kdenlive are finally coming to the ports tree, for the first time ever! we're still waiting for them to be committed, but that will probably happen in a few days. anyway they won't be available as packages in the next 7.1 FreeBSD release yet
in the meanwhile you can download the shell archives (.shar) and install through them... here's how to: http://kdenlive.org/user-manual/downloading-and-installing-kdenlive/pre-compiled-packages/freebsd-ports

there are two flavors of ports: release and development. choose "release" if you want the official release (0.7 and soon 0.7.1), or "development" if you'd like to test the newest features and get a lot of bugs fixed

just a note: if you're planning to report bugs back to the Kdenlive team (on http://kdenlive.org/mantis) please build the ports with WITH_DEBUG=yes, or your gdb logs will be useless

here we are FreeBSD, ports were finally committed to the tree (hey, it's a rhyme)! now Kdenlive it's just a `make install` away: http://kdenlive.org/user-manual/downloading-and-installing-kdenlive/pre-compiled-packages/freebsd-ports-and-packages we're still at MLT[++] 0.3.2 and Kdenlive 0.7, but the upgrade to MLT[++] 0.3.6 is already in committers' queue, while Kdenlive 0.7.2.1 will follow as soon as possible: i just need my laptop back... i've removed -devel ports because we're getting really frequent releases; in case of critical bugfixes, i'll just submit incremental patches again: if you're planning to report bugs back to the Kdenlive team (on http://kdenlive.org/mantis) please build the ports with WITH_DEBUG=yes, or your gdb logs will be useless thanks for reading! your friendly neighborhood FreeBSD maintainer

mlt and kdenlive ports have finally been updated to the latest version... hoping i'll have no more problems, in the future i'll try to keep them in sync with the official release

instructions didn't change: just patch ffmpeg port (again -_-) and make install! unfortunately dvd exporting isn't supported at the moment, but i'll work on that, it shouldn't be difficult to port that to freebsd...

dear freebsd people (yeah, now i know there is some), ffmpeg has finally been updated to version 0.5! this means you don't need anymore to patch it, and the kdenlive installation process is now as easy as any other port's one: http://kdenlive.org/user-manual/downloading-and-installing-kdenlive/pre-compiled-packages/freebsd-ports-and-packages (just as a remainder)

it's been said that multimedia/ffmpeg-devel is going to be "reincarnated" (love this term). i plan to move kdenlive and mlt dependency to it, so... i'll be back as soon as it's committed

see you for the next episode!

p.s.: oops, forgot something
- dvd support was indeed introduced with 0.7.4 or 0.7.5
- webcam capture could soon become reality. some work is being done on video4linux2 porting for freebsd 8... stay tuned!

ehm, they were faster than me!

multimedia/ffmpeg-devel has been committed, but i'm not going to put a dependency on it at the moment; nevertheless, i suggest to install it in place of ffmpeg. instructions available at the the same old page
