Pleased to present a new ppa for Kdenlive stable series : at this moment 0.7.8 : ppa:sunab/kdenlive-release

Note : All packages are built against the standard KDE and standard FFmpeg in each Ubuntu version, so if you are using a backported KDE or backported FFmpeg, DO NOT USE THIS PPA or you will experience many problems.

P.S. : For users (knowing what they do!) who want to follow kdenlive development there is also a new ppa to track svn : ppa:sunab/kdenlive-svn (weekly build)
Use it to test kdenlive and file bug reports if needed on the mantis bug tracker. For this ppa same note as previous ppa : NO BACKPORTS.

Edit : FFmpeg recommendation
*for jaunty : a custom ffmpeg is included in my repositories (+libfaac) / webm unsupported
*for Karmic : a custom ffmpeg is included in my repositories (+libfaac) / webm unsupported
*for Lucid : use official Ubuntu repositories or the Medibuntu project repository "deb http://packages.medibuntu.org/ lucid free non-free" (+libfaac+amr) / webm unsupported
*for Maverick : use official Ubuntu repositories, an internal acc encoder is activated in ffmpeg 0.6 series.

Note 2 : My kdenlive packages force installation of -extra ffmpeg libraries in order to maximize codecs support, this is an "ugly" packaging but it is more simple for newcomers.

Edit 2 : Frei0r 1.2.0 is packaged for Maverick and Lucid.

sanub, did you ever determine if there was anything wrong with MELT .5.7 when I was using unstable kdenlive PPA called sanub2? By reading this thread it appears that you gave a final release a go for kdenlive 0.7.8 and melt .5.7. I may just have to try it again. I was just curious what could have been causing those very weird random results of the rendering processing window, the time stamp (did I make a mistake on some preference) and the quality of renders when using kdenlive because as I emailed you, using straight FFMPEG quality of end .mp4 was fine. Any response or thoughts would be great. If you're too busy I understand. I also take into consideration that it may be an I - D - 1 - 0 - T error on my part. ;-)

sunab, can you recommend a repository for the ffmpeg library packages that people should use with your build of mlt?

hi, the timer is not a problem it's a feature! You can disable it in the render menu, just below the resolution boxes.

sanub, can you respond to the question about which FFMPEG libraries to use with your new stable PPA for kdenlive and melt so that FFMPEG can render to H264 and AAC. Does the new ffmpeg in Maverick allow that without the -extra libraries that I used to use from Medibuntu repo?

Oops I forgot that,

For H.264 support : as other "patented in some part of the world things" it is activated only in the -extra versions of ffpmeg libs. For now and Maverick, and probably forever ...

For AAC support: FFmpeg is not compiled any more with support of libfacc, a library used to encode audio in acc (incompatibility with the LGPL licence controversy). The Medibuntu project have the same ffmpeg version of each Ubuntu release (granting compatibility) but with libfaac enabled.
In maverick there is no change, aac is disabled, and as far as I known ffmpeg is working on a free internal aac encoder but it stills experimental (not activated by default, and probably not usable in production). After testing on a virtual machine the free internal aac encoder of ffmpeg is active.

So my modest advice is to use the Medibuntu repositories, but a this moment this project doesn't support Maverick as it's not officially released.
Or I could package myself a custom ffmpeg-extra in my repositories, I've done that in the past. What do you think?

Sanub, I know you do enough already so not sure if you want to package the custom ffmpeg-extra libraries in your repo. I'd say if the medibuntu repos work then we can just use those but that begs the question. When will the medibuntu repo for maverick be up?

I'd say just let us all know what you want to do as you're the man with the custom PPA. I myself am still on Lucid Lynx and don't plan on going to maverick until a couple months after it's release to ensure bugs are all cleaned up but what about early adopters?

I don't know, maybe in the month following Maverick release...

I will add a custom ffmpeg (+libfaac) for Maverick for testers and early adopters.

Update : After testing on a virtual machine the new free internal aac encoder of ffmpeg is active in Maverick, no need of a custom package!

thanks for requiring the extra packages automatically i think it's great. the first thing i do on a new os install is install the extra packages but i think it's great for people unaware

From ppa sunab, the French version installed and work perfectly on Lucid (2.6.32-27-generic).
Very good and motivating first feeling with little things like the entry menu "clip in the timeline" and also the effects gfx/numerics modificators.

Rendering seems to be quicker...and others good things to discover i presume.
I have noted a little mistake in the fr translation, the sentence who come after complete rendering say "Rendu terminé dans 00:00:xx" in place of "Rendu terminé en 00:00:xx", the famous case of 'in' translation ;-) [if i find another ... hop op ...]

EDIT [Entry 0001841 in Mantis bug report. Resolved in 0.7.9] And "youpi", i have succeed to provoce a Kdenlive suddent death, playing softly with a animated title clip created with the previous version of Kdenlive (the 'depreciated' one who is in official ubuntu repository) [if i can reproduce it, i'll send a report] [End EDIT]
