Qt only build

Mon Dec 01, 2008 12:59 pm

I'm just wondering if it would be possible to build kdenlive 0.7 against Qt without any KDE libraries?

The answer: No.

What would you like to accomplish by doing that?

@madsdyd: thanks for the reply. Why Qt only? Well kdenlive could run on a wider set of platforms, particularly those that do not naturally provide KDE libs. In particular lighter machines and possibly Nokia tablets where the ram used by all those KDE4 libs could be put to better use just running Qt apps. Also, porting to winmac platforms would be easier.

Although your points are correct in the general sense, IMHO, when you pursue video editing, you should be prepared to use a machine with sufficient CPU and RAM ressources :-)

That aside, Kdenlive is very much a KDE program, and tightly integrates into KDE. This is by design.

Sure, if the only aim of using kdenlive was full on lne video editing than that is entirely correct but I'm also interested in using kdenlive for screen capture and assembly, and simple audio-only editing tasks for podcasts. I'd also like to look into porting kdenlive to ARM based netbooks and the less KDE libs I have to deal with the better. Anyway, I'm hoping that only kdelibs is needed.

I also posted this in the hope that someone else may be interested in looking at a minimal KDE kdenlive build and may want to help out.
