After updating my system from Lubuntu 12.04 to 14.04 I am having numerous problems including failure of Kdenlive to launch.
The launcher has the exec command kdenlive %i -caption %c %u. If I use this in a terminal I get various errors relating to the command-line parameters but Kdenlive does launch. If I remove these parameters from the launcher Kdenlive still does not launch.
Any ideas as to why this is happening or what the parameters do would be appreciated.

Post the terminal output after trying to run Kdenlive w/out any parameters....

Sorry for the slow response.
I've now removed and re-installed kdenlive from the sunab/kdenlive-svn/ubuntu repository.
I still have the kdenlive %i -caption %c %u command in my .desktop file, causing kdenlive not to launch.
If I simply type kdenlive in a terminal it does launch and I get
Gtk-Message: (for origin information, set GTK_DEBUG): failed to retrieve property `GtkRange::activate-slider' of type `gboolean' from rc file value "((GString*) 0x7f304b666c20)" of type `GString'
Gtk-Message: (for origin information, set GTK_DEBUG): failed to retrieve property `GtkRange::activate-slider' of type `gboolean' from rc file value "((GString*) 0x7f304b628d20)" of type `GString'

Perhaps I should simply alter my .desktop file. Does anyone know what the extra parameters do?

Those error messages are inconsequential.

Here's Kdenlive's command line options. It seems that -caption has been removed.

Usage: kdenlive [Qt-options] [KDE-options] [options] [file]

An open source video editor.

Generic options:
--help Show help about options
--help-qt Show Qt specific options
--help-kde Show KDE specific options
--help-all Show all options
--author Show author information
-v, --version Show version information
--license Show license information
-- End of options

Options:
--mlt-path <path> Set the path for MLT environment

Arguments:
file Document to open
-i <clips> Comma separated list of clips to add

I've worked out what is causing my problem by playing around with the command line.
The trouble is with that -caption %c parameter. If I put quotes around the %c (-caption "%c") Kdenlive launches fine. ;)
It does actually do something. It's part of the window title & can be any text, by default you get "Kdenlive" as title anyway so the -caption parameter can indeed be ditched from the .desktop launcher file.
Thanks for the help ^-^
