Ok, long-time Kdenlive user here. I use it for professional videography, mainly weddings.

Running Kubuntu 14.04 64bit with Kdenlive installed on the machine since 11.10.

Had kdenlive 0.9.8 installed from ppa.launchpad.net/sunab/kdenlive-release/ubuntu trusty main

Just a got a big shocker when I realized that the last big kde update from a few days ago automatically (?!!!) un-installed my kdenlive and digikam. I didn't notice it until I realized my desktop icons were replaced with the .desktop blanks.

Went into muon to check and sure enough, kdenlive was uninstalled / autoremoved maybe (since I always do a sweep of update, dist-upgrade, upgrade, autoremove, with my eyes closed) by the giant update.

So I installed digikam again, no problem there.

But, I went to install kdenlive and it will not let me, with neither apt-get, nor aptitude.

The problem they both say is with kdenlive's dependency with libnepomuk4 (which it can no longer install) because of libkdecore5 and libkdeui5:

Code: Select all
(From aptitude)

The following NEW packages will be installed:
  kdenlive libmlt++3{a} libmlt-data{a} libmlt6{a} libnepomuk4{ab} melt{a} recordmydesktop{a}
0 packages upgraded, 7 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Need to get 3,331 kB of archives. After unpacking 42.0 MB will be used.
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
 libnepomuk4 : Depends: libkdecore5 (= 4:4.13.3-0ubuntu0.1) but 4:4.13.97-0ubuntu1~ubuntu14.04~ppa2 is installed.
                          Depends: libkdeui5 (= 4:4.13.3-0ubuntu0.1) but 4:4.13.97-0ubuntu1~ubuntu14.04~ppa2 is installed.

Code: Select all
(From apt-get)

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

There are no held broken packages, I checked.

Any assistance will be helpful. I know kdenlive is going to maybe get an upgrade at Randa, but just want to make sure this gets taken care of. Using this professionally, it is really scary when things like this happen :'( Thankfully I don't have any immediate gigs. Usually it all works out. Also want to make sure the devs are aware of this issue / repo / package incompatibility.

Thanks, all.

Same issue is happening to others, as posted on Kubuntuforums https://www.kubuntuforums.net/showthrea ... xplanation!

User Rog132 clarifies the issue with:

There was an oops with the Kubuntu backports PPA:

http://irclogs.ubuntu.com/2014/08/10/%2 ... tml#t16:38
Riddell oh I put 4.13.97 into trusty kubuntu-ppa/backports when it should have been in beta 16:38

Maybe soon:

yofel Riddell: are you working on the digikam or kdenlive backport issues? 19:00
yofel Riddell: I'm uploading a no-change rebuild for digikam until the new one is ready and I'll fix the kdenlive rebuild version 19:07
Riddell thanks yofel 19:27

That sucks. Kdenlive doesn't even use Nepomuk anymore. I reckon the package maintainers need to remove that requirement.

Use the build script located at the MLT website: http://www.mltframework.org/bin/view/MLT/BuildScripts#

I'm running Ubu 14.04LTS. I just built up a release a couple of days ago.

I had solved this problem using sudo ppa-purge ppa:kubuntu-ppa/ppa
This allowed me to downgrade to KDE4.13.3 (from KDE4.13.97), and reinstall KDEnLive ;)
