How to install Kdenlive 0.9 on Ubuntu 15.10?

Hi there!

I've recently run into a seg faulting problem with Kdenlive 15.08.1, 15.12 and 15.30. Basically, it has a segmentation fault whenever I try to use rotoscoping. It's a known bug and is reported here:
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=358223

I absolutely need rotoscoping for my project, and I have been trying to get Kdenlive 0.9 installed on Ubuntu 15.10 64bit via source.

Following the instructions from here:
https://kdenlive.org/download-source

I am unable to continue when running
Code: Select all
git checkout v0.9
and am met with the following error:
Code: Select all
fatal: Not a git repository (or any parent up to mount point /home)
Stopping at filesystem boundary (GIT_DISCOVERY_ACROSS_FILESYSTEM not set).

I am not familiar with KDE git, and have always been reliant on PPAs. Any guidance or steps on how I can overcome this and install Kdenlive 0.9 through source would be greatly appreciated!

In the worst case that I get no reply here, or it is simply not doable, then I will install Ubuntu 14.04 to my 16GB pendrive and run Kdenlive 0.9 from there to get the job done. I would rather not have to go to such lengths though.

it may be a lot less work than downloading the source and compiling, along with the other bits that may need to be built along with it.

The quickest and simplest way would be to download and manually install the all the trusy versions from here and then marking them as held.

Everything better than that is also a little more complex.

I always found this useful - https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PinningHowto

In the end, I was extremely short on time and ran into issues trying to compile even version 8 for which the source is easily downloadable from Sourceforge. So, I did opt to run 0.9.6 straight from my pendrive.

To my extreme surprise, version 0.9.6 is stable as a rock compared to Kdenlive 15 so far. I only managed to crash 0.9.6 when trying to view the background image in the title editor over 7 overlays with multiple effects and transitions in place.

Thank you for this information. I will try to get this working now. If I succeed, I'll set your answer as the preferred answer.

You might like to have a look at this topic: https://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=269&t=128951#p344301. I had real problems with the version of Kdenlive that came as standard with Ubuntu 15.10, but I reverted to a previous version using the process described, and (apart from some icons not showing in Xubuntu) have never had any major problems since!

I appreciate you adding information. However, I ran into issues trying to install kdenlive this way.

Specifically,
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install kdenlive=0.9.10-0ubuntu0~sunab~trusty1

resulted in
Code: Select all
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
kdenlive : Depends: libnepomukcore4abi1 (>= 4:4.9.0) but it is not installable
Recommends: libavcodec-extra-54 but it is not installable or
libavcodec54 but it is not installable
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

So far, at least in my use-case CorrosiveTruth's steps work. The only issue is that I am stuck installing version 0.9.10, which is not as rock-steady and stable as the default 0.9.6 that comes with Ubuntu 14.04.3. Regardless, thank you all for replying and providing different ways about this. I have learnt new steps, and hopefully this information can assist other users in the future.

P.S: It'd be really cool someday to have binary releases for Kdenlive, much like how Pitivi has a Linux distro-agnostic all-in-one binary that just simply runs on a double-click. It would make it far easier to grab older versions regardless of distro, for the many of us who are unfamiliar with KDE git.

I would like to reinstall Kdenlive 0.9.10 on Ubuntu 16.04 - but it does not seem to be available in any repository. Of course I would prefer to use the latest version, but having tried it, I find that the clip monitor is still showing a distorted image, and it crashes if I try to edit and save text on my title clips. 0.9.10 would still regularly crash, but I was always able to carry on having invoked the autosave feature! I suggested a means by which it could be installed on 15.10 in an earlier post, but the Sunab repositories do not seem to be accessible (or maybe do not have the files any more). Any help appreciated!

Don't know what the Ubuntu 16.04 packagers actually packaged ... in the past, the official repos were, well, demanding. Title editor crashes have finally been fixed, but you need a fairly recent MLT, which packagers usually ignore.

There are now official Kdenlive project *ubuntu ppas, see https://kdenlive.org/node/9460 ... maybe you can give them a try? Please make sure that after adding the ppa that you really get the new packages for Kdenlive, MLT, and frei0r, and not the stock 16.04 ones that are outdated!

Autosave is still available as of Kdenlive 16.04.0.

I have tried installing the latest build from the Kdenlive-Master repository, but whatever I do, every release since 0.9.10 has had given me a distorted clip monitor image, and an unstable experience. For example, with the latest build I find that it crashes every time I use the title editor and press 'OK'. I continue to get very good results with 0.9.6, which I have installed on a Tahr Pup system on a USB pendrive, and am now using to edit my videos. I would really like to reinstall this on Xubuntu, but there seems to be no repository which now has it!

Following my recent posting, I found a .deb for 0.9.6 on the old version repository, and installed it. I was still having a problem with the monitor, but traced that to the project default profile I was using, which was QVGA widescreen 29.97 - which probably does not work with the latest versions of the underlying framework (I am not an export). I managed to adapt the HD 720p standard profile to my needs, and that seems to cure the monitor problem. Out of curiosity, I upgraded to the latest version on the Kdenlive-Testing repository, and the monitor worked fine - but the titling editor crashed every time I hit 'OK', even on a new project. I am therefore back with 0.9.6. I would love to use the new titling features, but can't do that until I know it is stable!

As you are still experiencing crashes in the title editor, please file a bug report and include a strack trace. You can do so by running Kdenlive from gdb and then, after the crash do a "bt", then copy and attach the full stack trace to the bug report.

The title editor crash on exit has just been fixed. You'll get this fix with 16.04.1 or earlier if you use the Kdenlive testing repository.

Apt Pinning is what you are searching, I did for a while on Debian, should work the same in Ubuntu.
in /etc/apt/sources.list, add a line like this:

deb http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ trusty universe

then force the downgrade in /etc/apt/preferences:

Package: kdenlive*, melt, libmlt*, frei0r*
Pin: release a=trusty
Pin-Priority: 1001

Not tested, maybe need to refine...

Thank you so much. I have just updated from 0.9.6 to 16.04.1 and tested this out, and it now seems fine. I'll report back if there are any problems. The ability to alter letter and line spacing is particularly useful to me.
