Hi guys,
I did a small experiment just to improve my Linux skills and installed kdenlive on Raspberry Pi 3. I overclocked Pi 3 up to 1.35Ghz so I think I have a chance to run it OK. There is an old version of Kdenlive on Raspbian repos (0.9.10) it did install successfully (though no shortcuts were added on menu and I had to start it by typing "kdenlive" in terminal.) But it did start successfully, and I imported few footages shot with Canon 5D Mark3 and drag&dropped them on the timeline. Playback was choppy and not usable. Then I tried rendering with 4 threads, it continued for some time but the sysem hung after a while. I'd like to try a newer version and see what happens. Could you please tell me how do I compile it on Raspberry Pi step by step? Another issue about VLC: I can't play any video with VLC on Raspbian. Neither by installing from repos or downloading the source code and compiling it myself. It basically shows black screen and only audio is playing. Compiling it with MMAL flags (hardware acceleration) is broken. The only way I could do it by enabling experimental OpenGL driver using Raspberry Pi configuration utility and then setting video output to open gl on the VLC settings. But it could play up to 360p only. Any resolution above that is choppy. I'm sure that Raspberry Pi 3 is capable of fluid playback of 1080p videos, because OpenELEC (KODI) media center operating system on the Raspberry Pi can play 1080p videos thanks to hardware acceleration. There's also OMX Player that comes with Raspbian and it can too play up to 1080p videos. But it can only be run using Terminal, no gui. I would be grateful if you guys provide some tips here. |

My tip is to not use Raspberry Pi to run video software. You don't send a boy to do a mans job !!!
Why would anyone want to do this ? |

ttguy, we've laughed at the ZX80, well sort of. Now we have a Pi Zero. In a few years, you will be able to render your videos with the processing power weaved into your jacket... so this running Kdenlive on a Pi 3 is just the beginning of The Revolution...
