Well, is there an easy way to downgrade to 16.12.0? It is quite risky business to upgrade the software when you can't easily roll back.
I tried to install the kdenlive-dbg (debuging package), but then I don't even get an error message when the application crashes.

Any hints would be wonderful, thanks!

KDEnlive version: kdenlive --version kdenlive 16.12.1
Kubuntu Release: 16.04 Codename: xenial

Ooh, well, the crash is not fixed, but I found a workaround to install 16.12.0. Just download the packages manually from http://ppa.launchpad.net/kdenlive/kdenl ... /kdenlive/

If you know about a cooler way to do it, please let me know.

every single package is 16.12.1 on that link, they're just for different Ubuntu builds. I have the same issue with startup crashing. I am going to try the daily build at:

ppa:kdenlive/kdenlive-master

They released a fix already in the stable PPA if the daily dev build is too risque

I have got similar problem.
I update kdenlive to 4:16.12.1-2 but it cruched with me project build on 4:16.12.1 How can I downgrade to 4:16.12.1
I tried reinstall from https://launchpad.net/~kdenlive/+archiv ... ive-master
but I don't know which file is suitable for my os - I have linux Mint 18 (64) ?

Just use the stable build PPA (linked on the downloads page). It has been updated and fixed.
