Hello @ all!
ATM i'm using Dolphin 1.1 and KDE4.1.4. At KDE 3.5 - I'm a great fan of (of the functionality of ) smb4k for connecting to windows/cifs shares. as far as i've seen, smb4k still isn't ported to KDE4 - but this doesn't matter if Dolphin/konqueror/kio-smb obtains comparable features. But at the moment, I have found that Dolphin can't authenticate against smb-shares. What about a little nice entry at the context-menu-entry in Dolphin/konqueror/kio-smb with "Authenticate as..." for cifs-shares ? i think that wouldn't be very tricky to realize, but very comfortable to use... What do you think about this? Or having any better ideas ? |

KDE 4.x is capable of authenticating aganist Samba shares. You just have to either pre-provide credentials ( set them in System Settings > Sharing ) or provide them in the URL ( smb://user@server/share )

I've seen these settings. on changing locations, you can have changing credentials: at Home, at work, somewhere. Smb4k is remembering the combination of share-id + credentials IF you want (by checking 'remember password' in the authentication form). thats very comfortable
thats not very comfortable.... and I bet that there are users who don't know about this way |

Dolphin in 4.2 works with samba even slightly better then Konqueror 3.5.9. Auth works fine. But what it most irritating, it does not mount share. When you click on some file, it gets copied to local cache somewere in /var/tmp. It is quite inconvenient especially for large files like movies or archievs.
I use smb4k for samba but I think that Dolphin developers ought implement mount mode in future releases.

Jubb, thats one of the most things i'm missing on Dolphin/Konqueror within working with samba-shares. dolphon pro or conra - it's a good file-manager - many times better than Windows & Co filemanager BUT Konqueror still is my actual love - in 3.5 *and* 4.x |
