two suggestions for KDE design

Tue Jan 20, 2009 12:41 am
I am using KDE 4.1.4 in fedora9. Generally, it's great work in most cases.:shade:

However, I think there are two demerits should be improved obviously.

1. Compatibility to Gnome applications. Especially, the font display is different from gnome environment. The users always has to reconfig font for two desktops. Why not share an unified configuration for font with gnome?(Maybe they are also thinking about this...;-)) As I know, the font configuration problem has suffered people for years, and it is improved quite a lot, while I think there is still some work to make it perfect.

2. The KDE4.x looks pretty cool, and it is more efficient than any previous version. But I think some 'cool' features are useless actually. Such as the small widget in topleft of desktop. I have to say I don't know what's that for. (Zoom and lock ?) It's not deserved to take up a conner of screen for such useless feature. I think we should only put on the features used every day by most users.

I hope KDE 4.3 will take some attention on these problems.

Best regards.

1. Why not share an unified configuration for font with gnome?

Why must kde use gnome's configuration? Why not gnome uses the kde's font configuration?

The gtk-style named gtk-qt-engine can use qt4 style to render gtk-apps, so now gnome apps will use kde4 font, no problem anyway.

2. I don't see anything on the topleft of desktop, there's something on topright, bottomright and bottomleft, but by default there's nothing on topleft.

For the Cashew on the top-right, you can use the iHateTheCashew plasmoid, or if you're to lazy to install it (like me), you can resize the taskbar, drag the Cashew near the bottom-left corner, so that it "standing" on the bottom edge, and then expand the panel so that the K button covers it up ;-)
