Is hal a hard dependency?

Fri Jul 03, 2009 12:23 pm
Hi,

look like ubuntu is in the process of getting rid of hal:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Halsectomy

I wonder if KDE currently works without hal?

I do not believe any part of KDE 4 hard depends on HAL currently, except the Solid backend, which will need to be replaced with one that uses the newer system.

Which is one of the reasons to have such an abstraction in the first place.
Application written on other software stacks might have to be modified to follow such a change, KDE apps won't.

Man, I feel like searching for all posting of people who were so ignorant to believe that this wasn't necessary at all because HAL already provided enough abstraction.

Cheers,

Don't worry, Kubuntu will not be affected by the halectomy. HAL will likely stay around in Ubuntu for a good long while, as long as things still depend on it, its usage will just be minimized by default. Until an alternative Solid backend shows up, Kubuntu will continue to use the HAL backend.
