I hope this is the correct area to post this.
I've been using KDE4 on my PCLinuxOS system now for a couple of months. It's absolutely wonderful! Head and shoulders above KDE 3.5, IMHO. (Although, I still enjoy using KDE 3.5) I also enjoy using Dolphin. However, when using Dolphin, I miss having multiple split panes. In Konqueror, it's so convenient to open multiple panes in one window, point each to a different directory, and then move my files. I usually do this for backup. When backing up my cartoon work, I'd open three or four panes, and then navigate to the different drives (internal and external) and then simply drag my main file to those backup locations. I realize I can still do this in Konqueror in KDE4, but I think Dolphin would benefit from this enhancement. It'd be nice to have the option. So, please, I'd like to see Dolphin support multiple split panes, not just two. Thank you for allowing me to add my two cents. My sincere thanks and appreciation to all the KDE development team!:) |

Normally, you file feature requests at bugs.kde.org, the official KDE bug tracking system, or post an idea to KDE Brainstorm (part of the forums; if it's a popular idea, it'll get submitted to bugs.kde.org). This makes it easier for developers to keep track of requests and bug reports.
In this case, the maintainer of Dolphin has stated that this kind of splitting isn't planned for Dolphin, see e.g. bug 168592.

Hans, Thank you very much for the kind response. My apologies for not posting in the proper area. Thank you for directing me to that area. And thanks for the link to the Dolphin Panes discussion. I'm glad multiple panes (and horizontal panes) is being discussed. As one individual commented, "I don't know if not having infinite splits is a good idea or not (yes, we have Konqueror, but wasn't replacing Konq with Dolphin for file management the reason for making Dolph and "castrate" Konqueror?),..." Great question. I hope multiple panes in Dolphin happens. |

No problem, we've all been new to these kind of things.
Dolphin was never meant to replace Konqueror, it just happened to be the new file manager in KDE SC4. Anyway, if you want this feature I suggest that you post an idea in KDE Brainstorm (which I linked to earlier). I searched on bugs.kde.org and Brainstorm and couldn't find a similar request (which I find strange), but you might want to do a simple search too to make sure it hasn't been posted. (You can use the standard forum search to search in Brainstorm). Personally I don't think it's likely that this will be implemented, but it might be worth a try.

I did a search earlier and the only instance that came up was the horizontal split view. I submitted the multiple pane suggestion. Thanks again so much. |
