Hello you all,
I'm using KDE for about 6 months, so I am a newbie and this my first post. Besides here, I am a member of the Dutch Ubuntu-forum, and we performed a short test there on browsers current adaptability to the coming standard html5. To test that, you can go here: http://html5test.com . A maximum of 300 points can be scored. I know, it's just an indication, but also kind of a yardstick where we are now. It appeared, that webkit-based browsers like Chrome, Chromium and Safari performed quite well (60-70%), but to our surprise Konqueror was one of the worst performers with only 25%. I tested version 4.4.2 (I have Kubuntu 10.4) several times with the same result, and other forum member @Vistaus (who is also a member here) tested version 4.4.80 (KDE 4.5 beta), with also the same result. Now, it was assumed that maybe this is due to the fact, that Konqueror uses KHTML in stead of webkit, though webkit was developed out of KHTML. Now, I have two questions: - Is this a point to have attention in further development of Konqueror? (I realise that the html5 protocol is not completely fixed yet ) - It was suggested on the Dutch forum, that it could be possible to exchange KHTML for webkit. I'm not familiar with this kind of 'under the hood' tricks, but is this possible and how could that be archieved? Thanks for your attention, and all for the good. |

Switching from KHTML to Webkit is relatively easy and painless. First you need to install the Webkit KPart ( which is part of playground in KDE SVN and has many distribution packages ).
Then open System Settings > Advanced > File Assocations. Find "text/html" in that list, then switch to the Embedding tab. Use the controls there to put Webkit on top, then Apply.

@bcooksley and @john_hudson,
Thank you for your kind and adequate responses. I managed to fit webkit in, and then Konqueror gave a score of 55%, which is roughly comparable to Firefox 3.7. Again, it was just a test where browsers stand at this moment, with respect to the coming html5 standard. I also want to thank you on behalf of the Dutch Ubuntu-forum, that organised this. |
