Seeing source videos while working on transitions

Hi all,

I have 3 source videos, A, B and C. I'm trying to make a video M which dissolves back and forth between A, B and C.

I'd therefore like to be able to have the project monitor look like this:

+-----+-----+
| A | B |
+-----+-----+
| C | M |
+-----+-----+

so that I can see the 3 source videos as I move through the timeline.

I think I can just about do this by:
* Having 1 copy of each of A, B, and C at 50% size, aligned appropriately, and composited onto the bottom track
* Having a second copy of each of A, B and C at 50% size, aligned bottom right, and composited onto the bottom track

but when I want to dissolve from A to B then back to A, I have to:
* cut out the bit of A during which B will be shown (i.e. what I would normally have to do)
* split the composite of A into 2 sections (which for some reason can't be done using the "cut" tool?), one before the first dissolve starts and one after the second dissolve ends
* add the two dissolves (as normal)
* fix up the start/end points of the composites, if they weren't already right

This feels fiddly, and seems like it's going to take more time than it feels like it ought - and once finished, there are going to be a lot of little bits of composite transition that I'm going to have to go through removing.

Does anyone know if there's a simpler way for me to do this please?

Thanks
Ian
