Yet some additional information on the problem. I was incorrect that the problem only occurs when both the dissolve transition and pan&zoom are present together, I looked more closely and it also appears in areas where only pan&zoom are present. My particular project is 1080p 29.97 fps 16:9. For completeness I have attached a screenshot of what the problem looks like on this project.

Should I file an official bug report on this or leave it here in the forums for a while?

Another observation on the shearing distortion problem is that for some reason, after playing around some more, it occurs far more often in a slide show clip created with the "pan and zoom" option than it does in a normal time line built up manually with individual clips for each of the images. Perhaps this is why it doesn't seem to be reported very often. I have built up two videos with a total of around 125 images, most of them with pan and zoom, and I don't have any shearing. I did see it in one or two places but I was able to get rid of it by moving things around slightly. If I create a slide show clip, however, the shearing is quite frequent.

Dave, I'm going to jump in here and say that I'm pretty certain this problem was resolved in some version of MLT after 0.5.10. I just installed Ubuntu Maverick and Kdenlive 0.7.8 with MLT 0.5.10 in Virtualbox and was able to duplicate the shearing issue if I chose 1080p, 29.97 fps and 16:9. It is not present in the 0.7.9 SVN version of Kdenlive that I use on my host machine when I pick the same settings.

I'm not familiar with openSUSE and whether you can use a ppa like you can with Ubuntu to get the latest development releases or whether you'd even want to do that. But just be aware that there's no reason to file a bug report. It's already fixed.

Jack,
Thanks for clearing things up. As I am only using MLT 0.5.10 at the moment, then it may well be fixed in a later version. An earlier post indicated that the problem was related to swscale and that it was theoretically fixed in versions >0.7.2, but I was still seeing it with 0.10, so I thought I would bump this back up. It now sounds like perhaps the problem was not related to libswscale.

OpenSuSE has something similar to ppa called OpenSuSE Build Service but I'm not sure if anyone has a dev release of MLT or Kdenlive, I'll check. If not, I can always built it myself, but I'm pretty busy these days so I'll have to be opportunistic on that :)

I agree it doesn't sound like a bug report is appropriate at this time. Thanks again.

Jack,

I just compiled the SVN version of kdenlive (rev 5520), and I have upgraded to MLT 0.6.2 and am still seeing the shearing problem. I think I'll start a separate thread with more details however, since this has gotten a bit off topic for this thread.

samraining:

The distortion was a bug in MLT, you probably need to upgrade your MLT package to a newer version.
