Pan & scan zoom

Tue Dec 16, 2008 8:14 pm

Hi,

I was just wondering if Kdenlive has a pan & scan / zoom video effect?

I want to make simple animations (dia-show) from still photos and would like to add some panning/scanning and little zoom-in zoom-out effects on the foto's in addition to the transitions.

Regards,

Martin

Dan's working on this at the moment although some parts of this can already be done via the composite effect. Monitor issue#473 at Mantis to stay up to date on this. When it's in (and Dan sounds pretty eager :o) you can try it out by running the builder wizard or waiting for packages.

At the moment the composite transition cannot replace a proper pan&zoom effect such as available in Kino or ideally such as implemented in higher end software like Vegas. I actually really wanted to use Kdenlive for a project but after a lots of experimenting a finally decided to purchase Vegas Studio.

Having a real effective pan&zoom effect would be a great addition. That and proper color correction and I should (at last) be able to do video editing in linux...

It was possible in the older version of kdenlive to pan/zoom, but this appears to be lost in the current version.

This is the old thread on the subject:  http://www.kdenlive.org/forum/zoom-and-pan-still-images

There is a "work around" where one can create a short pan clip using the separate Linux application stills2dv to create a short panoramic video clip (from a still image) and import that clip into kdenlive:  http://www.deniscarl.com/stills2dv/  [Note, the kdenlive forum software may put a space at the end of that URL.  When one gets the "page not found", simply remove the space, presse enter, and the URL shoudl work].  Unfortunately stills2dv is terminal based, and it requires a lot of iterative work to get the pan/zoom to follow the precise area that is desired. It could really use a front end where one draws/sizes rectangles over a hypothetical image area.

I don't suppose it is possible (is it ?? ) to use the code from stills2dv in kdenlive, using kdenlive as the front end ?

I'll take a closer look at the stills2dv code. Fortunately, it is written in C, which makes it easier to integrate.

Keyframable Pan&Zoom effect was committed to Kdenlive a few days ago. I haven't tested yet, nor do I know whether it makes use of the new MLT interpolation, but basically keyframable Pan&Zoom should now be possible in Kdenlive.

Feel free to test on a recent development release ! (compiling from source or using the sunab2 PPA on Ubuntu)

keyframable Pan&Zoom does appear in the latest version (rev 4520) however, it does not work. The keyframes are resizable and movable but the end result does not appear in the project monitor. The project monitor just displays the clip in its unaltered form no matter what changes are done to it.

I loaded a still image onto the timeline, selected it, then activated Pan & Zoom. If I'm doing something wrong, please let me know.

Thanks,
waynevid

Yeah I tested last night and it doesn't work. Dan Dennedy also just sent a mail to Kdenlive-devel reporting the issue. Hopefully it should be corrected soon (at least in time for the next official release !)

Just a little update:
MLT 0.5.6 was just released. It includes the interpolated affine transition + filter.
It is usable in Kdenlive through the Affine transition (called "AffineComposite" up to 0.7.7.1) or the Pan and Zoom effect.
Keyframes in the Pan and Zoom effect should work now.

Let me add that the interpolation quality in the preview monitor is very low to make it faster. You need to render it to get a decent quality. If you want the best quality, create a custom render profile and add "rescale=hyper". Basically, that sets the scaler interpolation method, but the affine uses the same "hint" to choose its interpolation routine.

Also, if you are applying to a high res digital photo with a lot of detail or lines, then you might get undesirable shimmering or... I am not sure how best to describe it. In this case, apply a Box Blur with all factors = 1 _before_ the Pan & Zoom effect.

Maybe in a future version, there will be an automatic "Ken Burns" virtual effect that takes into account aspect ratios and some randomness to use with the Slideshow Clip, but not yet in this version.
