I've just installed kdenlive and am quite frustrated as I can't find any cross fading type transition. In all tutorials it is shown but it doesn't exist in my version. Maybe someone can helb me!

Second problem I'm having is text colour for title screens - I can't change it and white on white background is stupid...

Which Kdenlive version have you installed?
The crossfade transition can be added by clicking the bottom right or bottom left corner of a clip, and will affect the track below your clip.

Crossfading in Kdenlive is called "Dissolve" transition.

TO change the color of your text in titles, you should be able to simple select the text block and then a toolbar with text attributes (font, size, color, alignment) should appear on top of the window...
