Pan and Zoom "jumping" problem

Sat Nov 13, 2010 2:44 pm
I am using Kdenlive 0.7.8 on Ubuntu Maverick. I place my jpeg still image into the track. I apply the pan and zoom effect with two keyframes. The first is at 100% zoom, and the second is 150% zoom. I center the image in the second keyframe so it looks okay. I press play and in the middle of the effect the image jumps. It makes the effect completely unusable. Any ideas on what may be causing this problem?

You can download the video in low quality (for bandwidth) here:

Thanks in advance for the help.

Not being a programmer, I can't speculate as to the cause but I can tell you I've noticed the same problem. For me it happens consistently as the zoom transitions from 112% to 113%. I just finished putting together a slide show and I had to work around the problem by either keeping all the keyframes at 112% or less or all of them at 113% or more. This is with 0.7.8 on Lucid.

This was reported on MLT list and fixed a few weeks ago.
If you are using Ubuntu, the sunab ppa "kdenlive-svn" (pre-release) version contains the fix.

Yes, thanks for the info, Dan. I just upgraded to 0.7.9 and the problem does indeed seem to be fixed.

I was just about to post a message about another pan & zoom problem I encountered while doing my slide show but I stumbled across a post of yours from a few months ago which exactly described my problem and suggested a workaround. See quote below from last June. The Box Blur effect worked pretty well. I had resorted to scaling my jpegs down with GIMP to get rid of the shimmering but this works better.

I'll vote for any continued improvements to the Ken Burns effect like you mention below because I do a lot of slideshows and they rely heavily on this effect.

Thanks,

Jack

Re: Pan & scan zoom

Let me add that the interpolation quality in the preview monitor is very low to make it faster. You need to render it to get a decent quality. If you want the best quality, create a custom render profile and add "rescale=hyper". Basically, that sets the scaler interpolation method, but the affine uses the same "hint" to choose its interpolation routine.

Also, if you are applying to a high res digital photo with a lot of detail or lines, then you might get undesirable shimmering or... I am not sure how best to describe it. In this case, apply a Box Blur with all factors = 1 _before_ the Pan & Zoom effect.

Maybe in a future version, there will be an automatic "Ken Burns" virtual effect that takes into account aspect ratios and some randomness to use with the Slideshow Clip, but not yet in this version.

The Slideshow clip animation options does include the low pass filtering, which is what this blurring accomplishes. But not Pan and Zoom - dunno if I will since you can have more manual control in this mode.
