I imported a video clip with the following dimensions:848 x 480, codecs H.264 / AVC, framerate 30 frames per second, duration 1 minute 47 seconds, .MOV file.

But when I play it on Kdenlive, video goes very slow, with stutterings and other annoying stuff, giving the impression that the video dimensions are too high, but it's indeed the lowest value (848 x 480) I can get with my pocket camera. What else could be done? It went just fine on Windows movie maker, so it shouldn't be CPU problem me thinks. I cannot use movie maker because it doesn't recognize .mov files, so i hate to convert every video.

Please help, thanks

First off, be sure you are on the latest version. If you're using Ubuntu and installed from the Ubuntu repository, the version in the Ubuntu repository is outdated. You'll need to click the download section above and follow the instructions to install from Sunab's repository.

Second, I found that the default project settings on my computer had a resolution that was too high for smooth playback while editing. I changed the playback to around DVD quality and the editing was smooth.

You might also want to post:
* Your distribution of Linux
* The version of Kdenlive you're using

Thank you for your suggestions.

I run Ubuntu 10.10 for net-book, and Kdenlive version was indeed downloaded from Ubuntu repository (version 0.7.7.1+svn4571-1)

Unfortunately, I have no idea how to download the latest version from Sunab's repository. I'm supposed to go to System Menu > Software Sources > Third-Party Software (9.10) or
System Menu > Administration > Software Sources > Other Software,
but I cannot find system menu in the first place. On my toolbar there are Firefox, Ubuntu software center, Workspaces, Files and Folders, Applications. When I right click on Applications, i can choose System, but when I go there I cannot find nothing which could be related to Software sources.

I also tried to run config wizard on Kdenlive several times, choosing 768 x 576 4:3 PAL, then HD 720p 29,97fps but it didn't help

Not sure if it has any significance, but my notebooks screen is 10.1'', CPU is Intel Atom N270, RAM 1 GB

Are you running Netbook for a particular reason? I tried it a few months ago and frankly like the standard desktop edition better. And not to mention I ran into a few bugs along the way as well.

Unless you have a specific reason for running Netbook, I would switch to Desktop. I doubt the kdenlive authors are going to devote time to getting it running on that version...and I don't blame them.

And running the config wizard is not going to help with the version you have. AND I would guess that kdenlive is not going to perform well on the atom processor.

Well, I just don't have a desktop for the moment, so I am forced to run Netbook.

So, it's not possible to use Kdenlive on Netbooks, however fast CPU the Netbook may have?

Is there some other solution in my situation, I mean other video editting software which could be run on Ubuntu 10.10. for Netbook? I tried Kino, but got error that this is only for DV video editting, I have no idea what this means.

Maybe I should install some other OS?

Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Thank you!

I would suggest possibly downloading OpenShot and see if it works for you. I would suspect that you're going to get some of the same playback issues with OpenShot as well.

On a netbook with an Atom CPU, you can not edit H.264 well on Linux unless that netbook has a NVIDIA GPU and use a build of MLT that supports VDPAU. Your better experience on Windows is probably because the decoders take advantage of an Intel GPU. There is some support for Intel GPU-assisted decoding in Linux using something called VA API, but it is not yet available in MLT and therefore Kdenlive or OpenShot:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_Acceleration_API

As a workaround, you can transcode the videos to something easier to decode like MJPEG AVI, Lossless Matroska, or DV.

Alternatively, you can wait for the proxy clip ability of the 0.8 release.
