I am promoting electronic music and I would like to know how to use the Audio Wave effect. I dragged it over to the clip and it seemed to be attached but when i play the video nothing seems to show up and the clip goes black. all i see are these two lines and if these are the waves they are not moving along with the music. I understand now that it displays the audio waves instead of the video so i would also like to know if there is a way for it to be displayed over a picture clip like in this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jO6OnRUzu78

I would like to know alot about this effect. I would also like to know if there are any additional plugins i can get for this effect so i can optimize it. If there are any better programs for this please don't hesitate to recommend them

Audio Wave effect - "Display the audio waveform instead of the video"
So your observation of the video going black and having white lines is what is supposed to happen. But the white lines are also supposed to turn in to waves as the audio runs. It works this way for me.

To make it display over the picture in the video. ... duplicate the video track on a track below the one with the Audio wave on it.
Add a composite transition.
On the top video track (the one with the audio wave effect) add a color selection effect. Make the color you are selecting black and check the invert selection.
