I have to admit that most probably I never paid enough attention to the effect you are describing. I'm on a recent sunab ppa svn+mlt Kdenlive version which is a week old or so.

So when I tried to extract two frames with and without titling in Kdenlive using the built-in save frame context menu, something totally unexpected happens ... in the frames saved, the one with the titling now actually is lighter than the frame without title. But in Kdenlive's project view, it is the other way round with the project result getting darker when the title in composed on top of it. >:D

Yay bugs! :D

As for the darkening itself ... that is an MLT issue, so it's an upstream bug. I'll try to file a bug report on this.

I've filed an upstream bug report with MLT, https://sourceforge.net/p/mlt/bugs/204, #204 Composite transition causes darkening. Hopefully Danny or another developer of MLT fame will pick it up. It is a long standing bug, time to squash it. I've attached a side-by-side view of the same source clip, once with a composite transition, once without. The frame with the transition is noticeably darker.

Dan Dennedy was so kind as to fix this bug in MLT. I tested with a daily kdenlive tar ball and a recent project and the bug is gone. There can be still some slight rounding errors caused by color space conversions but it should be barely noticeably. In particular, the noticeably darkening should be gone now.
