i tried using automask effect but rectangle for selecting part of the video to be blurred doesn’t show up.

You can try these:
1. After adding it to the clip in the timeline, try pressing that clip in the timeline again (this might be the issue?)
2. Press the Show/Hide edit mode button at the bottom of the project monitor.
3. Go to the first frame of the clip in the timeline.
