I'm trying to edit a video and now that I'm adding all the transitions I'm having a bit of a problem. At first the "dissolve" transition worked just fine, but after a few minutes of using Kdenlive, the preview video is just showing cuts instead of dissolve transitions. What happened here? I tried saving, closing and reopening the program multiple times but no luck.
And I don't know if the transitions will actually show after I render it but I would like to be able to see what I'm doing in the preview before I render it.
I'm running kdenlive on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS and I installed the program two days ago.
These kind of "what is see is not what I get" inconsistencies (between timeline and project monitor) are hard to spot and in my experience only become noticeable in big projects.
I would suggest the following: 0. Make a copy of your save first or you will tear out your hair later. 1. Select all and drag all clips/transitions a bit to the right, then back to the left. 2. Copy paste transitions, remove the old one, put the copy in its place. 3. Delete transitions and re-create them.
If there's no privacy/rights issue, you might want to upload your .kdenlive file. It should keep clip sizes and transitions, so we can check them out without having to own your clips (we will see the file name/paths though, so check your .kdenlive file with a text editor if there's anything sensitive). You can use boxnet, dropbox, mediafire or googledrive to host for example.
Is it [EDIT: the timeline] supposed to look like this? If yes, then the problem is simply that the transitions need to be between two clips and not just under one. It should be possible to make what you want by putting a black color clip on the entirety of video track 2:
If it [EDIT: the timeline]'s not supposed to look the way I showed, please make a screenshot of what it looks like in your kdenlive.
Also try steps 2 and 3 perhaps?

No it should not say "invalid". I think the warning message is relevant to this situation. You could try changing your locale. See if that helps. But you should not really have to do this. So might be a bug.
Hmm... It actually doesn't say Invalid on mine, so I don't know what's going on! I really need to get this job done and I'm not sure how. I'm sure the problem is not where I am, since I live in Italy it's normal that we use commas instead of points.
Edit: Not sure if it would work, but it's worth a shot maybe. I'll try reinstalling the software since the transitions were working at first and then just stopped working.

A bold claim. Over here, we also use those strange elongated points where some software may instead expect perfect ink-filled circles ... and this caused me several problems in the past with respect to various Kdenlive versions. So, yes, there's a good reason why people are asking for this specifically.
You mentioned using a Ubuntu 14.04 LTS installation ... which version of Kdenlive, MLT, ffmpeg are you using?
In another direction: what exactly were you doing? Maybe you can describe in some detail what you were trying to achieve and what edits you were doing? Just "At first the "dissolve" transition worked just fine, but after a few minutes of using Kdenlive, the preview video is just showing cuts instead of dissolve transitions." gives few information to actually help. How did you arrange the clips connected by transitions? Do you put the clips with the transition simply side by side? Then this is not how Kdenlive works (at least for the time being). Or did you properly place two clips to be joined by a dissolve transitionon different tracks, overlapping the clips for the time of the transition? Could you please be so kind as to answer qubodup's question on what your timeline is supposed to look like, especially with respect to track 2? That's an important question, and I'm basically asking the same again, just with a few more step-by-step questions.
"just stopped working" is really difficult to diagnose (at least for me). And yes, I'm under the impression that most of us here want to get our jobs done, so please bear with us, as we are doing Kdenlive projects not just for the lulz but also in part for a living.
You're right, TheDiveO. I'll try doing it some other way... I've tried doing it on separate tracks but that didn't make the difference. I'll try again and let you know how it goes before jumping to conclusions... I just reinstalled everything.
And... I'm sorry that I can't be more specific, but I'm not very familiar with the language and I'd rather not make a fool out of myself... but I guess I just did by saying "it stopped working" All I know is the transition was working one minute and the next it wasn't. Now I'm second guessing myself, it might be user error- I'll need to retrace my steps.
I'll be back with (hopefully good) news!
Edit:
Okay, so I was able to see the transition for a minute and I'm just thinking it may have something to do with me not knowing how to insert color clips smoothly. I realized that the problem was showing only when I insert the color clip.... okay- and now I figured it out and it's now working correctly. Thank you so much, I was getting all wrapped up for nothing!
Glad to hear that you could achieve progress with your project. Would it be okay for you to tell us what went wrong? It's definitely not to make you feel bad but instead to help others who may very well make the same slight mistake and don't know how to fix it. And you would help us helping others getting caught in the same situation.
In case you may have wanted to achieve fades to or from black: there are two effects called fade to/from black. These do a linear fade at the beginning and end of a clip in the timeline. They are convenient in many cases (but not always) when you don't want the hassle of an additional black color track.
Basically I wasn't applying the transitions correctly with the color clip- I was applying them to the color clip instead of the actual picture clips. So that's why it was showing up at first: I did it right the first time and then I thought I was doing the same thing but the black color clips were covering up the transitions.
I have problem with transitions inside of slideshow clip. If I create clip for a first time and set checkbox "dissolve" - it works. But after disablinga and enabling dissolve or another edit of this slideshow clip - transition does not work after this. I tried make "reload clip", close and open application - it did not help.
It does not work as in preview, and also in compiled project
Transitions cannot be enabled inside of slideshow clip in previous saved project and opened in program.
I also can record a video of problem and upload to youtube
