I like the sound of it!

But ... when I add it to a video, I just get a black video in my playlist and a strange scrolling effect in the properties panel.

How is this effect used?

A quick seach for "MLT dance effect" turns up this page: http://www.mltframework.org/bin/view/MLT/FilterDance with this terse description: "An audio visualization filter that moves the image around proportional to the magnitude of the audio spectrum."

Seems that the effect rather gets active in the parameters pane. Probably is its way to beg for a bug report...

Yeah, I get the idea, the description is in kdenlive too - that's what piqued my interest, and I remember seeing a video that used it once on youtube.

Maybe I'll try to hunt that down.

The user icon seems familiar

Somehow familiar, yes. At least my current installation of bleeding edge Kdenlive git master and MLT git master has the issue you mention: I cannot control any parameters, and some of the sliders slide around all the time. Looks funny.
