How can I create the PGM file for wipe transition?

I'm trying to create a custom wipe transition.
I created a greyscale image in GIMP and exported as PGM. I moved it to the appropriate directory.
Now I can see it in the transition list of kdenlive, but no thumbnail preview. The format seems not quite right and it works just like dissolve.

Does it need to be in certain size? Any ideas?

I managed to get my project done (in kdenlive) and I love the effect :-)
I also did a tutorial which I want to share here:

Have fun with the effect!
