I'm like to sub this video that has Japanese subtitles to add an English translation. If you see the first few seconds, there are blur effects in the Japanese subs for making a glow around the text, which I'd like to match but I can't figure out if it's possible.

The blur effect in the Title Clip dialog gives you a good preview but once you hit OK it just makes the text disappear. The Box Blur and Square Blur effects just make ugly smudges with horrible edge effects. They don't actually blur the text out into a transparent plane.

My guess is that there is no alpha-aware blur in kdenlive but I thought I'd ask in case I'm missing something. FYI I've got v. 0.9.6 on KDE 4.11.3.
