Does rotoscope work ?

Fri Jan 20, 2017 11:03 pm
So the rotoscope feature was broken for a while - it would crash the application if you applied it.
It appears with ver 16.12 that you can put the rotoscope effect on a clip. And you can draw the lines. But for me the effect does not stick around. I can not add keyframes and it does not appear to create the alpha channel that it should.
Are others experiencing this ?

At its most basic, it is taking film footage of live actors or other objects in motion and tracing over it frame by frame to create an animation. However, rotoscoping can also be used to execute composite special effects in live-action movies.

Sorry morningquotes - my question is not "what is rotoscoping". My question is - has the rotoscoping effect in kdenlive been repaired to a working state?

For me it works well doing this:

1- add the effect (make sure the track compositing in set to preview at least)
2- add the keyframe and create the points and move the handles as desired
3- go to another position and repeat step 2

I'm using Version 16.12.1, and I can't add a key frame for rotoscoping. What can I do? So, for me, rotoscoping is not working at all. I'm running Ubuntu 16.04 on a slightly older Dell Latitude with CORE i7.

you will only be able to add the keyframe after you have created the rotoscoping zone.

I created a rectangular region around the area I've need to limit a chroma key effect. Is this what you mean by a rotoscoping zone? I still can't add a key frame even if I do this. What am I still missing?

To all users experiencing problem with rotoscoping, here are the basic steps to add rotoscoping in kdenlive, starting from an empty project.
  • Add the clip you want to rotoscope in the timeline
  • Add the clip you want to see in transparency below the clip you just inserted. You can use a color clip for testing
  • Add the "Affine" transition between both clips. Make sure it has the same duration as the clips
  • Add the rotoscoping effect to the topmost clip
  • Click on the monitor. A red square will appear. Then you can draw your shape. Right click when finished to close the shape.
  • At this point, you should already be able to see your bottom clip through the top one. You can add keypoints wherever you like, that will enable you to move the rotoscoping handles on the monitor.

If any of these steps don't work as expected, make sure that you use the latest available version of Kdenlive, and then report issues here.

Thank you very much Alcinos.

That works. The transition can be "Composer" too. I don't know if the "right bottom" to finish the figure is a new feature. I think this is new way to finish and maybe that can be the different. What a stupid detail !

Sorry Alcinos and thank you for your time.
