PNG transparency. Conflicting info.

Thu May 11, 2017 11:25 pm
Using Kdenlive version 15.12.3 on Ubuntu 16.04.

I'm trying to overlay a simple png logo over two tracks of video but it will only lock to one or the other. If the logo is on "video 1" then it will overlay on "video 2" clips but not on "video 3". If there is not a clip on "video 2" the png doesn't remain transparent.

Searching the web I've found two contradicting sets of instructions about how transparencies work in Kdenlive. The first says that if you use a png on a track then it's background automatically becomes transparent and will show on top of all video tracks under it.

The second says you must use a transition for any transparencies to be seen. This seems to be how my version of Kden is acting.

Does this mean that to overlay the logo on the entire video I will have to cut it into pieces the same as each video clip and tell each one which track to overlay? That's going to be a tremendous amount of work for something that should be simple.

There was a change in kdenlives compositing behaviour. That is why you see different solutions.

Assuming you have your logo placed in video 1 in length of your complete video. Now apply a composite or affine transition to the clip and adjust the size to cover the complete clip. In the transition settings choose the lowest video track in the "With track" option.

A second way to apply a logo: Finish your project without using a logo. Create a second project with the same project settings and use the .kdenlive file of the first project as a clip. Place the logo on a track and the kdenlive clip below. If the logo is not displayed correctly, use a transition between them.

I'm assuming you mean the logo on the top track which is video 3 in my version, I tried this but wouldn't work. I have the logo on video 3, some short clips on video 2, and a clip the full length of the project on video 1. If I have it follow video 2 then the transparent areas go away when there is no video on track 2 and you can't see track 1. If I have it set to track 1 then the logo doesn't show when there is video on track 2.

I'd upload a screen shot but can't in this forum, let's see if this makes it more clear.

Top track, "video 3" logo
Middle track "video 2" short clips - when following this track the logo background blacks out between clips, blocking track 1.
bottom track "video 1" clip full length of project. - when following this track the logo only shows when there is no video on track 2.

I didn't think about importing the kden file even though I saw a video showing how to to use that feature. I ended up compiling the video I had then starting another project to finish the editing. I'll try that next time if I can't find a better solution.

Thanks
