Hi All,
I am new here so I hope this is the right section for my question, if not please advise.
Also I am new to Kdenlive so this question might be answered very quickly by all the experts around.

Some background information:
Last week I started to work with Kdenlive. After some tutorials I found my way rather quick.
My goal is very simple, I want to add two videos together in a split screen.
Above I want to show some software which shows the measurements results (video from screen capture) and below I would like to add a video to show what is changed in time, so nothing really fancy.
I inserted both videos to my project bin (with extensions ".avi" and ".mp4") and then dragged them to the time line.
Then I added a transition between both videos called "composite".
After that I added the effects and in the Clip Monitor I could drag the videos to the right place and I got the final result what I wanted.
Last time I used "Crop Scale and Tilt" and "Position and zoom" what worked fine to get what I wanted (if there are other ways, I am interested to learn).

Issue:
Now I tried to do the same, but somehow it does not work.
When I add for example "Position and zoom" and resize from 100% to 50% I do not see any change in the video shown in Clip Monitor.
Also I do not get the yellow line for the outline of the video and the red spots and lines to drag/ resize the video.
When I add the same effect to the clip in "Project Bin" it does change. And again I can place them wherever I want (yellow and red lines appear too).
Although in this case I can not see both clips, only 1 of them and the rest of the field is black.
Then I tried with the files from the first time, same result.
I checked in menu " Timeline" if I had timeline effects disabled but it was not.
I used version 15.? and when it did not work I updated to version 17.04.3 which has the same results.
I suspect I have to switch something on or off, but I have no idea what it is or where to find it.

Does anyone has an idea what this could be and what I could try?
When you need more information, please let me know.
Thank you all very much in advance.

Hi there,
just created a PiP effect in 17.08.2 like this:
* add clip 1 to video 1
* add clip 2 to video 2
* apply "Position and zoom" to clip 2, set the size to 50%
* to see the result move the timeline cursor to a place where both clips overlap.

Result: Clip 2 shown in 50% size over clip 1 which fille the complete screen.

Do you add "Position and zoom" to the clip on the timeline or to the track or to the clip?

Hi capslock,

Thanks for your reply.
* add clip 1 to video 1
* add clip 2 to video 2
* apply "Position and zoom" to clip 2, set the size to 50%
* to see the result move the timeline cursor to a place where both clips overlap.

This is what I would expect to happen indeed.
However somehow this only works when I apply "Position and Zoom" to the clip in the project Bin

Do you add "Position and zoom" to the clip on the timeline or to the track or to the clip?

What I tried is:
selecting a clip by going to "Effects" then push arrow down at "Crop and transform" then select "Position and Zoom" and drag it to the timeline on the clip;
right mouse click on clip go to "add effect" > "Crop and transform" then select "Position and Zoom";
going to "Effects" then push arrow down at "Crop and transform" then select "Position and Zoom" and drag it to the track. A small star gets visible on the right of Video number.
It all does not show up in the Clip Monitor and I can not see any changes taking effect. Also not after playing the video.

When I select a clip in project bin and do the same, drag the "Position and Zoom" there it does change.

I made two screenshots, please find them here:
Trying to add via Timeline:

Adding via Project Bin:

Thanks again!

Ah, pictures say more than a thousand words.

Try to change the clips from video 1 to video 2 and vice versa. If you have the resized clip "over" the full size clip, the PiP effect will be fine.

Hi capslock,

Thanks again for your reply and patience.
I found the position of the clips in video 1 and 2 does not matter for my purpose.
I want them to be both smaller say like 50% and put one on top and one at the bottom and on the sides I would like to place some information with help of a picture.

What I now did was to put both clips at size 50% and align one on top and one on bottom with the buttons just below X and Y in again the Position and Zoom effect.
I did not see any result in the clip monitor, as it is still black.
I rendered the video anyway to see what happened.
In this rendered video I do see the changes.
So the effects are taking place, but it does not show up in the clip monitor.
Also (as mentioned before and also seen in the pictures) I still can not move the clips as I can not see them in Clip Monitor.

On this website I found the clip monitor is only for clips in the project bin.
To show timeline clip I need the Project Monitor.
https://userbase.kde.org/Kdenlive/Manual/Monitors

So I guess the real question is now how to get the Project Monitor in my workspace?
In tab "Monitor" I have not found it so far.

Thanks for your help!

Hi capslock,

I found how to do it.
I went to "Clip Monitor" then right mouse click and there I could select "Project Monitor".
Once I had this, I resized one clip and the effects applied where visible right away!

The issue was that I was using the wrong monitor. :<

Thanks for all your help. It is very much appreciated!
