I've been using KDEnlive for a while now and I've figured out how to do some pretty elaborate stuff, but this is a brick wall I keep coming up against.
I can apply effects to tracks and clips, no problems. I can do complex multi-layer compositing with "transitions", no problems. But I keep finding myself wanting data-flows like this:
And it just doesn't seem possible without giving up on non-linear editing and rendering to an intermediate file. Am I missing something? or is this a fundamental limitation with kdenlive's model? |

sorry i can't understand what want you to do ... apply a compositions, maybe to reduce screen to half size.. and apply an effect on the ENTIRE SCREEN?
if you want do this... the effect needs to be applied to MASTER effects stack. and.. if you want to apply a composition to more than 1 track at the same time.. nope this is not possible... compositions are 1 track related.... effects are 1 track releated... and MASTER effects are ALL TRACK related. and for now there are no changes scheduled (before launching the new linear edit with MIXES) |

OK, let me give you a more concrete example:
1. I have two clips A and B. I composit them together as a split-screen, A on the left and B on the right. If I want to add effects to the combined result, I can use master effects, OK. 2. I have another two clips C and D and do the same thing. Maybe it's a different composition this time, some fancy alpha mask effect. And I want to add effects to the combined result - different effects to the ones on AB. I can still use master effects, I just have to use keyframing to turn off the AB effects during CD and vice versa. 3. But now I want to transition from AB to CD using a wipe and I'm stuck. I can't apply one set of effects to AB and a different set of effects to CD during the wipe because there's only one master effects chain. OR another perhaps simpler example: I have an image that is a composite of say 4 clips A, B, C and D. I want to apply an effect equally to A, B and C, but not to D. This "new linear edit with MIXES" sounds intriguing. Is there anywhere I can read about it? Will it help with these use cases? |

This is just a way to speed up some long-time processes... like slideshows and similar.. but developers are working on it... and for now not on an evolution of compositions btw: https://invent.kde.org/multimedia/kdenlive/-/issues/796 |
