[SOLVED] Voice over video

Sun Dec 23, 2012 4:02 pm
Hi guys.

I have my video but now I'm attempting to add an audio track to it in which I talk about the things shown in the video. But how do I do this best?

I think, I'd like to be able to watch the video while recording my voice and to stop/continue watching and recording at the same time or so. (How) Can I do this with Kdenlive? Or maybe you've got better ideas on how to do that?

(I'm aiming to make a video, generally similar to ViHart's videos (see here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIVIegSt81k). How does/would she probably do that?)

Thanks in advance.
Mekeor.

So, the heart of my problem is that you cannot record audio and watch the project-monitor at the same time! That's annoying! D:

You can record using Sound recorder or Audactiy and watch in the project monitor at the same time. Then you can save your audio file from Sound Recorder or Audacity and import it into Kdnenlive as an audio clip.

This works.

well, okay, yeah, that works :) thanks.

but anyway. it could be much nicer if this worked in kdenlive itself directly…

thanks

"it could be much nicer if this worked in kdenlive itself directly…"

Agreed.

There is actually a mantis enhancement request on this marked as resolved.

http://www.kdenlive.org/mantis/view.php?id=757
Which states:
"Under the "Record monitor", choose FFmeg capture and enable audio only. You can then play your project and press the Record button in rec monitor. "

So you could try this and report back.

This method does not work for me. Under my setup - where I have no web cam - record monitor says "Cannot read from device. Please check drivers and access rights." - see http://www.kdenlive.org/mantis/view.php?id=2891

That is crazy. I just added mantis bug http://www.kdenlive.org/mantis/view.php?id=2891 to report that it would be good to have audio capture even if there are no video capture devices. And then just now I notice commit 270875c57cdb0b1bf527357b2037657603994ade "23 Dec 00:07 - Allow recording audio even if no video capture device is detected"

I can confirm that 0.9.3+git20121227 does Allow recording audio even if no video capture device is detected. However, if you record and then switch to project monitor your recording stops. So you can not use it to record voice over and play the track while you record it. Contrary to what http://www.kdenlive.org/mantis/view.php?id=757 says should happen. I have raised a mantis defect on this.

Less than 24hrs later JBM reports he has fixed the http://www.kdenlive.org/mantis/view.php?id=2910 issue I raised on voice over video. I have not had a chance to test it yet. The Sunab PPA has not been updated for a few days. And I dunno if I can summon the effort to do a build from git.

But that JBM is a busy bee. Wow.

Sunabs PPA has been updated and I have now tested the voice over recording fix and it works. There is one outstanding little issue with it. - If you were last on the clip monitor tab then go to record monitor and start audio recording and then click the project monitor tab - then it fails. You don't go to project monitor and the audio recording stops.

But it does work if you start on the project monitor tab (don't have to have the project playing) and then go to the record monitor and start recording and then go back to project monitor then that works fine.

However, JBM indicates he may have fixed this issue too. I have not tested that.
