I am on Kdnelive Version 17.04.3 on kubuntu 16.04.
And I just noticed that none of the Audio effects I apply have any effect. Video effects do work.
But Volume Key framable, Mute, Gain, Barrys Statananizer all have no effect. Not in the timeline preview or on the rendered video.

Anyone else in the same boat?
