I don't think you have to convert from stereo to mono.

I suppose you have imported a video that has MULTI audio tracks (not channels).. so now you have more (4, at least, if stereo) channels to deal with.

This is how to select a single audio track from a multi audio track video clip.

After you import your clip into the project bin.. BEFORE dragging/adding it to the timeline .. select it.
Under the bin area there are some tabs : Project bin - Compositions - Effects - Clip Properties - Undo History.

With the imported clip selected click on the CLIP PROPERTIES tab. The Window will now show details on the current clip. On the right of this area you will find a group of 6 small icons (the first is a magnify glass.. the third is a speaker..): you have to click on the third.. the SPEAKER (if you hover with the mouse on it .. a tip saying "Audio Properties" will appear.)

Click on this Speaker Icon to open the AUDIO PROPERTIES panel. The window will now show you a list of the audio streams in the selected clip. If there are more than one..they will be all automatically selected/checked (blue filled check-boxes).

Uncheck the track/tracks you're not interested in (clicking on the blue checkmark.. it has to become a grey empty box when it's not selected).. and when ONLY ONE (the one you want in the project) is still blue return to the "Project Bin" (clicking on the First tab on the bottom of the current panel/area)..

Now you can drag/add the clip to the timeline.. and if you left only one track selected in the previous step... then only the audio track you left checked/selected will be added as an audio track in the timeline..

If you drag/add a clip having multiple audio tracks BEFORE doing what I described above and you have not unchecked the tracks you don't want/need BEFORE dragging/adding the clip to the timeline.. then ALL audio tracks that are present in that clip will be automatically added to the timeline.

That's because these are different channels in one audio track, but some formats allow you to have multiple audio tracks to choose from.

To select one of more streams in a file, go to the clip properties, the 3rd tab has audio properties. You can select which streams to hear. To merge them - make two into one - you need to transcode, I don't think kdenlive provides a merged view. Does it matter?
