Hi,
I am rendering my projects in MPEG 2 4000k 2 pass with the option "force progressive" in order to deinterlace the video and have a good result on the DVD player of my TV. But the result is not very good when objects are moving too quickly on screen: it is quite unpleasant for the eyes because the move is not smooth. Is it possible to improve deinterlacing with some option ? or with another free software ? Thank you Vincent Some details: kdenlive 0.7.7.1 (ubuntu 10.04) f=mpeg acodec=mp2 ab=384k ar=48000 vcodec=mpeg2video minrate=0 b=4000k bf=2 b_strategy=1 trellis=1 aspect=%dar pass=2 |

MLT since v0.5.0 has a very good deinterlacer - one of the best available - in the form of YADIF. More than likely, the problem is that you are deinterlacing. Interlaced output is better for the TV if you are still using an analog TV.

Thank you ddennedy for your quick answer.
I am making some experiments. It seems effectively that the problem does not come from kdenlive: when I watch my mpeg files on my PC (with LCD screen) or using my DVD player (on analog TV) the result is good, with or without deinterlacing (the difference is quite minor on my TV). Perhaps the problem comes from DVDStyler, which I use for DVDauthoring ? When I watch my DVD on my TV, the move of fast objects appears with a kind of jerk or blinking, very unpleasant... I just tried to author my DVD with Kdenlive, but I obtain an error : STAT: Processing /home/vmagnin/Vidéos/Films familiaux/DVD videos familiales/DVD2/La naissance d'Emma.mpg... WARN: Skipping sector, waiting for first VOBU... WARN: Skipping sector, waiting for first VOBU... WARN: Skipping sector, waiting for first VOBU... ... ERR: SCR moves backwards, remultiplex input. Sincerely yours Vincent |

Normal deinterlacing means effectively halving the frame rate - so even with perfectly ideal deinterlace, motion will become (2X) less smooth.
The only way around this is to "bob" deinterlace (make a frame from each field), but you get increased fie size, and many players won't eat it. |

I've had a lot of errors too with DVDstyler, I don't know why... There's only one program that always works good for me and it's DEVEDE. You can find it in the Ubuntu repository too.

Well, there is another factor and that is MLT coerces a bottom-field-first interlaced output, and strict PAL (576i) requires top-field-first. Even though the MPEG-2 file contains a field order flag, I believe some DVD players may not do any sort of correction. I do have fairly high on my MLT ToDo list to add a top-field-first output option. It is not exactly trivial because some field-based-rendering filters and transitions need to be modified.
Anyways, all of that applies only when using interlaced output. I suppose with progressive output, you are seeing motion judder due to a low framerate, high motion camera shots (typical in home and amateur shooting), and a distant viewing position in front of the TV. With a computer you tend to sit closer, and movies are shot with the knowledge that their low frame rate does not capture motion well (720p60 is great for sports). http://broadcastengineering.com/hdtv/solutions-judder-problem/ |

Although not an answer to your query, why deinterlace? Could you not encode as interlaced.
