Even after trying to use the build wizard to do my install on Ubuntu 8.10, I still can't render to H264 or MP4.  I know it has something to do with ffmpeg, but I don't have the slightest idea how to fix it.  I really like kdenlive a lot, but this is a feature that I must have since my media viewer of choice is my PS3.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Please create an issue for this on http://kdenlive.org/mantis (if you already have, then post a reference).

I have very recently added some logging to kdenlive_render, that perhaps can shed some light on why you do not get any output?
