Ciao,
i'm using kdenlive 0.7.6 on Kubuntu 9.04.
I'd like to edit a DVD made by a friend's of mine containing my holidays (made with pinnacle I souppose).
I'd like to remove some scenes and remake a new DVD.
The original VOB files, played with Kaffeine, was excellent.
But rendering with kdenlive I loose quality.
After editing project I used: menù -> DVD Wizard and I selected DVD PAL 4:3 with standard options.
The new VOB obtained is not in good quality.
What i'm wrong?

Thanks in advance.

It is normal to lose some quality because the video is being recompressed, but if you use an incorrect project setting, you will lose more than you should. Also, for better quality you need to use a 2-pass rendering profile. Please indicate the project setting and render profile you used.

Dear ddennedy,
thanks for answer.

In project setting I have (I try to translate Italian options in English one):

profile - HDV 1440 * 1080 50i
format: 1440 * 1080 speed frames: 25/1
Pixel format: 4/3 Display format: 16/9
Interlaced

My original Vob files properties:

format: MPEG 2 video
Frames width: 750*576
Frames speed: 50/1
Pixel format: 1.066667

In export options, i'm setting:

target: DVD
format: PAL
Type: PAL 4:3 VOB 2 pass

here is string command:
f=dvd vcodec=mpeg2video acodec=ac3 b=5000k maxrate=8000k minrate=0 bufsize=1835008 mux_packet_s=2048 mux_rate=10080000 ab=192k ar=48000 s=720x576 g=15 me_range=63 trellis=1 profile=dv_pal pass=2

unfortunately I don't understand those parameters.

Thanks again.

Ciao.

David.

In project properties you should choose the DVD PAL format, as your source and your export are in that format.

I'm sorry raps.
It seems impossible to get the original VOB quality, even if i'm setting project properties to DVD PAL format.

I'm trying different export format too.

From HDV PAL 1080 50i to the last one proposed in Theora Groups.

I solved in a strange way. I'm not sure is the right procedure (i'm not expert in video editing).

I created a new export format. I copied "Theora 720*576" export format having following orignal string:

acodec=vorbis ab=128k ar=44100 vcodec=libtheora minrate=0 b=12000k s=720x576 aspect=%dar

in a new personal one having this new string:

ab=128k ar=44100 vcodec=libtheora minrate=0 b=12000k s=720x576 aspect=%dar

I removed codecs audio because vorbis acodec give a noise in speakeres (double sound, echo and lots of beeps). Settings other codecs give error in rendering.

I get the original VOB quality, no matter witch project settings I have.

Anyway I do not understand what I've done and why it does work.

many thanks
Ciao.
