I'm not sure where my project settings should be? When I first installed Kdenlive I set it to 720p 60fps however I'm getting the feeling that's going to create a file that's way too large. Here's what I'm trying to do: add (3) four minute videos that are recorded in 720HD and add a couple of title clips as well as audio.

The total video should be no longer than 15 minutes. I plan on then uploading the final product to You Tube. Any suggestions? Thanks, Rich H

Is your footage really at 60 full frames per second?

For small file sizes you should

  • Use a codec with good compression ratio (e.g. H.264, XviD, rather than MPEG-2) for better quality per bit rate, and

  • Set the bit rate in the rendering dialog to e.g. 2000k (= 2000 kilobits per second). This number finally determines the file size. For 15 minutes you would get 15*60*2000k = 1'800'000 kb = 220 MB.

That makes sense but I'm not sure how to get those codecs? When I select rendering it gives me a window that gives me the options of HDV, RAW DV, AVI DV, Mpeg-2, Mpeg-4, xvid4, H.264, Flash, Real Video and Theora. When I select HDV as well as many others I get options to choose from. However when I select Xvid4 all of the options are highlighted in pink with a red x. I'm guessing that means that I can't select them? How can I add the codecs for both h.264 and xvid4 so I can use these options? Is there a way to do it thru the synaptic Package. I went there and typed xvid and it didn't give me a clear cut choice. I think those codecs must be in a special library or something. Please advise? Thanks again, Rich H

I'm never sure about this, long time ago since I installed kdenlive from packages. But as far as I remember you should install libxvidcore4 and then re-run the config wizard (Settings > Run Config Wizard). Regarding H.264, I think you should use ffmpeg from the sunab repository, but no guarantee for correctness. sunab will know better ;)

I went to synaptec for libxvidcore4 and it appeared that I already had this installed and then I ran the config wizard but it didn't seem to do anything? For some reason I still can't render with xvid or h.264?

OS
hi brevardo,

please report :

- Operating system type and version,
- ffmpeg package version (see in synaptic) and origin (official repository or third party)

your problem is related to the ffmpeg package. In most distros the default ffmpeg install is "stripped" to blacklist some codecs with patents problems in some countries. I will explain how to change that after your report.

sunab.
