Clips resized when rendered, black borders on all four sides

I'm cutting and pasting some stuff together that was recorded in a 720x560 resolution, 4:3 aspect ratio (PAL). So I set the project profile to be 720x560, 4:3 as well. I also want to add an intro clip, which happens to be in 720p format, but I figured I'd just scale it and crop it later.

When rendered, the 720p intro clip is rescaled to fit the lower resolution, with black bars above and below, which is to be expected. However, all other clips are also resized for some reason, to be roughly (exactly?) the same height as that intro clip. This means there are black borders around the clips on all four sides. Which is quite silly.

I'm not sure how to go about fixing this. Am I doing something wrong? I've also tried rendering the whole thing with the intro clip removed, to see if that was causing the problems, but even then, the clips are scaled down and black borders are added on all sides.

I've found some older topics about black borders on these forums, but as far as I can tell these aren't borders on all four sides, and the resolutions of the clips and the project profile are different. For me, they are exactly the same. Yet it still rescales them :(

If there's any more information I could supply that would be useful to diagnose the problem, let me know. I'd really like to find a clean solution for this. Thanks for reading.

tl;dr: rendered video has black borders on all four sides, despite the resolutions and aspect ratios of the clips being the same as the project's. How do I fix this?

I've changed the project settings to 960x540 instead, as it needs to be 16:9 for YouTube anyway. Now everything works as expected. Really strange.
