H.264 with 5.1 channel sound?

Tue Nov 27, 2012 3:32 pm
Hi,
I'm using the HD-camcorder Sony HDR-SR1E which delivers AVCHD videos with dolby digital 5.1 channel sound.

The import of the AVCHD clips do work fine. But I don't know if all channels of the sound are imported.

When I render to the output file using the profile "h.264" the video part is fine but only the sound is reduce to two channels.

Do anybody know if it would be possible to enhance the h.264-profile so it would also support 5.1 channel sound?

Thanks in advance for any help,

Regards Artur

h264 refers to the video stream, audio stream is seperate and the two are multiplexed together into a suitable container format like mkv, mov, mp4, avi.

MLT supports multi channel audio but not sure whether kdenlive exposes that feature in its interface.

Have you looked into ffmpeg 5.1 support? If you can find commandline options for encoding audio suitable then you could test whether kdenlive / MLT pass the audio through as captured in camera encoding via a custom render profile or even just a custom audio profile for multichannel export to multiplex in after.

If its not accessible then you could encode your video as either a h264 stream only, or h264 with 2 channel audio, then use a DAW with jack transport that supports multichannel audio to build a 5.1 audio stream maybe with a video player that can sync via jack transport and then multiplex that into your encode from kdenlive with ffmpeg or MP4Box, TSMuxer etc after. That would give you both a 2 channel and 5.1 choice at playback.

Hi yellow,

sorry for my late response.

I have looked for information if ffmpeg can pass through the 5.1 sound but couldn't find any specific information about it.
The pass through question seems ti be teh importent one. Since I could change the profile I used for rendering to generate a output file with 5.1 sound characteristics. Used avconv to get the specific file information.

So the question is still can kdenlive pass through the original 5.1 sound of the camcorder or not?
There is, from my point of view, no deed to have full surround functionality build in to kdenlive.

Update: Seems, that Kdenlive do NOT pass through the 5.1 sound of the camcorder. Whatever, in the output file all 5 channels do provide sound, but somehow, the channels are mixed up.

Regards
Artur
