I don't know if this is a bug or if being an admitted n00b to KDEnlive, I'm missing something, but either way, I would greatly appreciate some advice.

I'm subtitling a video. As far as I know, the only way to do this is to use title clips. I have all my title clips lined up, and I've selected a white font. I don't do anything different between any of the title clips - the only thing different is the text in each clip.

When I render the video and open it in VLC or SMPlayer, I notice that some of the title clips are missing. When I go back into KDENlive, I notice that the "missing" title clips do not appear in the clip monitor when I move the cursor to the clip's point on the timeline. When I open the title clip and click on the text, I see that everything is as it should be. I click "OK" and go back to the timeline, and the title clip appears correctly. If I render the project again, the same thing happens as if nothing got fixed.

I then noticed that if I "fix" this issue as I just described, and then - without rendering - save, quit and start KDEnlive again, the same title clips appear "missing". Deleting those title clips and replacing them do nothing to solve this problem. The exact same title clips keep "disappearing" from the monitor even though they exist in the timeline.

What could be causing this issue and how would I fix it?

I remember reading reports of a bug with respect to title clips and rendering, please search this forum for some posts about this topic. However, I've not bitten by this bug so far, but that may be related to the fact that I'm always composing my title clips onto other clips. As I use Kubuntu I can't comment on another distro and its Kdenlive packages.

Alas, Kdenlive's title clips are not the only way to do title clips. You can also use, for instance, svg files or png files. For creating svg-based title clips, inkscape may come in handy. There's one catch to avoid, though: Kdenlive cannot render multi-line svg text, so you need to break it down into separate text elements. Or you use inkscape in its full glory and simply export a png title file that you immediately can use as a clip in kdenlive. This should offer at least a workaround for the time being, if not even a full solution. For instance, I'm using several titling backgrounds that I created in inkscape and then exported as png in my Kdenlive projects without any issues.

There is a related bug, but my issue is different from what's described in that bug report.

My advice - don't do subtitles with kdenlive. Use a tool designed to do subtitles. You can then make them soft subtitles which are much better. Or you can burn them in at the last minute using other tools.
