Hello

For kdenlive you do not need to convert .mts files to .mp4 format.

ffmpeg -i input.mts output.mp4

does the trick, but the compression by default settings is quite drops the quality quite radically for editing purposes in my mind.

OS
add "-crf 20" to the ffmpeg line and you should be happy (video quality factor)
