Playback is fine but audio stuttering on rendered videos

I'm using Kdenlive Version 17.12.3 on Ubuntu 18.04 (MLT version 6.6.0 and FFmpeg libraries).
I'm having trouble rendering videos - both new projects and working from pre-existing projects. The audio stutters badly during playback of the rendered videos and it's all coming out a bit slow. The strange thing is that the playback within Kdenlive itself is flawless (so enabling proxy-clips wouldn't be a solution).
I'm rendering using a custom profile consisting of these settings: ar=44100 s=1280x720
Any ideas?
Thanks,

Just to update the question, I'm able to successfully render a video by running melt from the command line with no arguments:

Code: Select all
melt clip1.kdenlive -consumer avformat:output.mp4

...but there's still nothing doing from Kdenlive.
