Crashing during rendering -

Sat Oct 10, 2020 8:56 pm
Hi,

I'm using KDenlive 18.12.3 on my Chromebook in the Linux container. I've done a smaller project before, and was able to render it with very few issues. On this bigger project, about 30 mins long, I can't render it to save my life. I've been trying various things for about 2 weeks now, and every single time it either crashes KDenlive completely, or more often, it gives me this error:

[mp4 @ 0x7975c4200f00] Using AVStream.codec to pass codec parameters to muxers is deprecated, use AVStream.codecpar instead. [mp4 @ 0x7975c4200f00] Using AVStream.codec to pass codec parameters to muxers is deprecated, use AVStream.codecpar instead.

From what I've read, this error usually has little to do with codecs, but is usually something else. What I've tried:

- made sure the chromebook's language is set to US, and the keyboard layout is US as well.
- Removed all titles from my project, as it seemed to like crashing on titles for some reason.
- got rid of every transition effect other than simple dissolve, as I've read that some transitions can cause issues
- tried rendering in pretty well every format
- when it crashes at a particular point, it is sometimes, but not always, at a photo... so I've tried taking that photo out, rendering again, for just that section, and it works..... then I do the entire project and it crashes at a different spot, or even at the same spot.
- Tried removing and purging my Kdenlive installation, and installing again.
- Tried removing and purging my Kdenlive intallation and installing the newest version, 20.08.1, but was unable to import my project. Kdenlive keeps freezing and then crashing while importing my project.
- Installed version 19.04.3b, and it was able to import my project but was pretty jumpy, and again was not able to render the project. gave me the same error.

The frustrating thing is that it is not crashing at the same spot usually. And the other frustrating thing is that when it does crash, I make a modification where it crashed, render just that section, and it works fine. Then I render the entire thing, and it crashes again, either at the same spot, or a different one, either earlier in the timeline, or later.

I wonder if it is some kind of cache issue, as it often seems to render longer and further into the project before crashing when I'm freshly rebooted. Sometimes if I'm trying various things, the more often I try rendering, it seems that the earlier it crashes. But not always.... I know that later versions have a cache clearing button somewhere, but I can't find one on mine. And I don't even know if that would help as I once manually cleared what I thought were all the cache folders.

Does anyone have any ideas for me to try?

crashses and bugs are usual on older releases.. 2018/2019 .. and the only way is to switch to a 2020 release...

i suggest you ot use the Jumpy verion 19.04.3b to make the rendering.. (using the zone rendering to find the issue)
after rendering the project... just switch to a 2020 release for next project.

BTW have you tried to save (a copy) the project using the 19.04.3b .. and reopen it on 20.04? (or 19.12)

P.S. are you using the Automask?

No, I'm not using Automask... as far as I know. I don't even know that that is!

And no, I haven't tried saving in 19.04.3b and reopening in 20.04.

BUT, good news! After posting this last night, I kept searching on the KDE site, and on the news release page for Kdenlive 18.08.3, in the comments section someone was saying he was having similar issues to mine... someone replied to him to try turning the jpgs in his project to small .mp4 movies, and then importing them into his project. I tried that last night, let it render, and this morning I have my project fully rendered! He also suggested trying to convert the jpgs to png files. I haven't tried that, but may, just for fun.

I guess Kdenlive can have issues with jpg? Or at least with a few bunches of them in a large project! Because it wasn't an issue rendering small mp4s of them... just when they're part of the large project. Which would explain why when I would render small parts of my large project, all was fine... the problem wasn't one particular file, it seems it was the collection of them.

I will probably switch to a newer version for my next project, but I thought I had read somewhere that the most stable version for Chromebooks was the one I'm using. Maybe that's not the case.

Thanks for your help. It is a great piece of software, other than a few glitches here and there...

ubuntu Mate 20.04 newest Kdenlive Version 20.08.2 Rendering output .mp4 doesn´t work. Outpunt webm works even when user GUI is crashing after 5 minutes.
I have wav audio lcips, as video ONLY jpg Files. I didn´t try the - may be - solution: converting jpg´s in png´s ...

So next time I try it with the converting ... but anyway: should work with jpg´s too.

Thanks for the good job - many features are more handy and intuitiv to work with. Hope I ´ll get the rendering as well :-)
