I discovered krita a week ago and i think it is awesome. This is a quick sketch that i did today with some custom brushes:

My goal here was to get real impasto depth.
By the way, do you know how can i save my own set of brushes?

At the top of the brush setting you can enter a name and then click "Save to Presets"

Welcome! I love the unusal style of the image. Please share your presets with us. As Sven said, give them a name and press save. I haven't tested uploading presets with the windows version of Krita yet, I'll put that on my todo.

Boudewijn I have saved my presets brushes inside of krita, but im not sure where they are stored; I cant find any kpp file with the name of my brush... and, how i can upload stuff? in the get new hot stuff i dont see any upload button...

Wow i am really happy to see more pure paint style. like the oldschool . i love the strenght of impasto, and as i see you can do very interesting studies in B/W and color. welcome to the forum and Krita World. and now Presets stuff very fast!

WINDOWS USERS:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Calligra\share\apps\krita\paintoppresets
This is the path in a Win Vista OS, where the program stores all the SYSTEM presets. included by default.

C:\Users\YOUR USER NAME\AppData\Roaming\.calligra\share\apps\krita\paintoppresets
This is the path where USER stores his own saved presets. or new ones.

LINUX USERS:


The follow image shows the common path for USER stuff. in this case my user is "ramon" (replace by yours.) and by default the .kde folder is hidden so you need to be able to see all folders and files. in my OS, LinixMint is Ctrl+H but yours can be different.

brushes folder contains all the brushes you create by yourself and saved after quit Krita.
paintoppresets folder contains your saved presets.

tags.xml is a file to store all your preset tags, by the moment is not shareable but is good to know where it is if you want to modify manually or delete it.
and kis_paintoppresets.blacklist is a file where you stored the presets that you delete inside Krita.(pressing the red basket icon, for example in brush editor) that means, if you delete this file you recover them.

Well, about the technique:
The "Oil hard Imasto Grain Merge" brush (pixel brush) is using a pattern as a source. Sice, Opacity and Mix_Factor are determinated by the pen pressure. The rotation depends of the drawing angle...so nothing special. The default mode is Grain Merge.
You will see how you can draw_and_overwrite the impasto stroke direction with this brush. But there are two important limitations for this brush:
1.- You will be adding this kind of fake impasto only with those colours embebbed in the pattern that you are using.
2.- The brush has a "build-up" behaviour so you will be always adding darkness (you will see another brush here "Oil dard Imasto Screen" for adding lightness).
Due to this second reason i think that is a good idea to cover all the canvas (or at least the desired area) with just one Grain Merge Stroke. you can do it in a separated layer mixed in Grain Merge mode again (thats what i did in the sketches above).
About the knife painting brushes, they are very simple... If i can remember correctly they are Colour Smudge Brushes. They have a "destrutive behaviour" but i think that used artistically they can do a lot in order to get that kind of dirty impasto mixes.

i think that it would be....just freaking awesome if... the smudge brush could use a Pattern as the source; just to define Values, not Colours... Im not sure but...i think that we would be veeeery near for a real oil imasto behaviour; here a stroke could mix in the canvas, colour and "impasto" (and this two things would have visual consistence) dont you think??

PD: One quick question... when you dont use the classic circular dub... diagonal strokes have a serrated edge...isn it? They are not antialised enough...isnt it?

It shouldn't be too hard to add extra source options to the smudge and/or color smudge brushes -- no promises about when that will happen though! I'm a bit busy right now with the textured painting option... Could you post a picture showing the edge problem you mentioned?

About the edge problem...now i dont know what i did the other day but today i cant replicate the error...i really dont know...but i will inform if the same happens again...thanks!
