Editorial Illustrations.

Fri Nov 09, 2012 7:54 pm
This may not be for this forum - the illustrations are kinda different. I got a huge job this friday, all in all 18 images and it had to be done quickly. Hope its ok that I brag.

So its the first time I really used Krita, in a panic, for editorial illustrations to a large monthly magazine. Scary as hell. But I pulled it off and Krita handled like a dream all the while so well damn done! :)

I pasted a few of them into another A5 to post here. So... its about social inequality and the difference between social work standards between cities. Horrible subject but they wanted to really have some odd illustrations for it and on a weirder subject - so since its written as a competition between the three larger Swedish cities I did it as a Dog Show like competition and in a sorta 60'ish comic style.

Ohohohohoh these aren't mine - posting them as a secret - they belong at the moment to the magazine.

Oh and from top to bottom, left-to-right the subject illustrated is:

- Employment
- Locked out (of the workmarket, it makes sense in Swedish I guess)
- Common mans health
- Alcoholism
- Child Poverty
- Searching Socialwork (when they actively tries to find homeless people for example)
- Unemployment
- ... and the header (Hundliv= a Dogs Life)

Hey Jensreuterberg,

Fantastic work on the silouhette and expression of each character. I also liked the original color choice and the handpainted texture.
Very good work . Cool you can show it ; my last client here limit me the right to publish my professional work with Krita on Internet.

Question : Did you worked them in CMYK inside Krita and delivered *.tiff ? or did you paint them in RGB and let the work to the desktop publishing departement for color convertion ?

Thanks. Those siluettes kinda did the deed at the end. I got the job Friday night and it was supposed to be done monday night - so this weekend has been spent in an absolute panic. It took me a day just to find a style that would work and was possible at such short notice.

I gotta admit to RGB and then let them handle it. Poor layout-ninjas...

Also, I know its ok to show it - but its not 100% ok, you know? I wouldn't post it on Facebook or Google+ if I say that much.

Ohh , thats really really short time for a comission of 8 illustrations. Congratz again because you managed them very well. And thanks for showing them here and the answer about the layout :)

Hi Jensreuterberg,

Thanks a lot indeed for having shared your *very* nice illustrations.
I liked them a lot :-)

Just out of curiosity:
1. Did you draw them on Ubuntu or Windows?
2. Always related, what version did you use for them (e.g. Ubuntu 12.04 - Windows 7 etc)?
3. Did you use any other software to finish them and, most of all, why (e.g. Photoshop, Gimp etc)?

Thanks in advance for your reply :-)

Deevad: Thanks but it wasn't 8 illustrations in all, it was 17 - I just posted my favorites here ... it was one hell of a weekend I'll tell you that (I clocked in about 11 hours of sleep all-in-all) :-)
They paid good though - and I get free cinnamon rolls next week at the editors office... yaaay cinnamon rolls!

JoseConseco: Yeah the editor kinda fell in love with it too... :) Been planning on printing a Tshirt with it.

Silvio Grosso: Thank you.
I use Xubuntu 12.10 on my desktop and Ubuntu 12.04 on my laptop - Krita and Xubuntu are just an amazing pair - my desktop computer is just not that up to specs, its a bit on the older side and with Xubuntu it works brilliantly. Krita has always been good on any *buntu version but here it just flew through (according to those in the know it has something to do with Xubuntu not using OpenGL or something, I have no idea) even on this old clunky computer.
(I've been planning to try out Kubuntu but the desktop computer just doesn't do well with Ubuntu and I fear that Kubuntu demands just as much from the hardware. My laptop (Asus UX32VD) was hell to install and a friend helped me out so I don't dare play around with it too much)

I'm not going back to windows after Vista crashed my computer beyond recognition for the umpteenth time. Windows 7 is ok I guess its just... I don't need it any more.
I'm not saying that Windows sucks totally or anything - just that it was like dating someone who cheats on you. It can be fun in a weird way but I wanted to try something different, found it, and now I'm kinda hooked on Linux.

I only used Krita to finish the drawings. Sketched it from scratch, used only the pre-installed brushes.
