Vandalk's RedDoorHQs Comics!

Mon May 18, 2015 9:10 pm
Hello people!

My name is Daniel, or vandalk over most forums and social networks where I can grab this user name. I'm a 27 year old brazillian illustrator, recently turned freelance, and who recently migrated from mypaint to krita too!

I'll use this topic to post the webcomics I do for a site I run with two other friends! What we do is that someone starts a story, and then another artist has to continue that story from where the last one left of. So the artist always has complete autonomy to write the story and draw the page! But even though all the work in these pages are mine, and mostly done on Krita, unfortunately, I can't share them with an open license, since they also belong to our project, and we print it at the end of the year an all!

But I'll say this now, every image on this topic, posted by me, is authorized to be used in any form of promotion work for the Krita software or by the Krita Foundation!

And also, a little disclaimer about the process: All the drawings on this page were done on Krita. The base colors were done on Gimp with GMIC, simply because I can't use GMIC on Krita windows (yet). But from the rough sketches to the finished ink, and the final colors, it was all Krita. What is not Krita is: The panel layout, and the lettering. The panel layout I choose to do on photoshop because I folow a specific model we agreed with, that use layer styles. So maybe I'll soon be able tomeove that part to Krita as well. The lettering, well, I have yet to come to grips with Krita text function.

So enough blabering, and here goes the first image:

Well, that was page 04 of the story "Fantasmagoria"! It's a story about a detective who can see and interact with ghosts, questioning some ghosts to try and discover who is the murdered a politician in an abandoned town.

Here goes page 07, like I said in the previous post, we are three authors at Red Door HQs and every week the author of the page changes, so after I did page 04, Rafael did page 05, and Bruno did page 06, here I go again with page 07.

Krita wise, this was the page I finally got my workflow right in using the ruller assistants! I mostly used the vanishing point, the paralel ruler and the inifinite luler. I really really missed an effective way to do straigh horizontal(0°) or vertical(90°) lines with any of the rulers. If I could just hold shift and be locked to 15° angles when using the paralel ruler or the inifinite ruler it would help a lot.

I also had to dig up some triangles (those you use in geometry class? triangle shaped rulers, one with angles of 30° 60° 90° and one with two 45° angles and one 90°) to do some advanced stuff like finding Diagonal Vanishing Points, or adding another two point perspective system to an already existing one, so I could rotate some of the tables correctly. I used the triangles over the computer screen following the steps I learned on this book: http://www.amazon.com/Vanishing-Point-P ... 1581809549

So I guess a "ruler" which could measure angles anyway you want, and that can be fixed at some specific angles and rotated would be really helpful to do all that without having to resort to external materials. Or even a "triangle ruler" that immitates the real triangle rulers and that can be rotated would also work, though it would be less useful. There is a measure tool in Krita, but it only measures angles related to the screen horizon (0°) and when you change tools it completely disappears so I can't use it in conjunction with the ruler assistants.

Anyway, here is the end result! I also have some process, should I publish them here or create a separated thread at the wips section? And what do you think, would it be nice to see the process?

New page for our new story "O Assalto" (The Robery)! This time around the story doesn't have any speech bubles, so there's no need to worry about translation and everyone can read it! This here is page 03, but here is a link to the beginning of the story: http://reddoorhqs.com/ano-iii/o-assalto-pag-1/

Somewhat late, but here is page 09 of "the Robbery"! If you want to read the whole story, you can begin it here: http://reddoorhqs.com/ano-iii/o-assalto-pag-1/

No surprises with this page, only that Krita's helping me save a lot of time! Specially doing those "speed lines" and the backgrounds with the perspective painting assistants! After 6 pages using Krita I have a really nice workflow for this, and it's working wonders! Thanks Krita developers and community!

Whew, It's been a long time since I've last been here! The end of the year was really busy, so I couldn't keep up with posting here!

Anyway, here are the las three pages I did for Red Door HQs! This is the story of a old man who wasted his life searching for gold in a dead mine. It was more emotional, so I tried to experiment a bit with narrative and art style!
