My works on Krita

Tue Feb 16, 2016 7:20 am
Hello!
I am new on Krita, and this is my very first try.
I admit that I love this piece of software. :)

For better quality, view it on ArtStation :

Thank you!

Wow, solid work!

This is some beautiful rendering, I'd love to learn more about it if you have time/patience to write about it.

I would be pleased! :)

What would you like to know?

Here, the very beginning of the process, I started with a dark/grey/blue background, then with a very soft and large "Block_basic" tool, I drew several lines to define the background. I think at this state, the composition is made of 5 or 6 layers with different colors that I modulated to have someting like this :

Oh cool :)

The middle/background of your painting really strikes a nice balance between a realistic and painterly look.
It looks like you defined zones with a lasso tool, then put some textured brushstrokes (with pastel texture, and the splat brushes?), and used a bit of color balance or HSV adjustment.
Is it all there is to it? Did you tweak your brush settings, or used anything custom?
Did you use some blending modes to get the nice glowing effect on the golden 'flowers'?

What did you find in Krita that changed your workflow, for the better or for the worse?

A few more detailed (and a bit subjective?) remarks about your painting.

The only things that is a bit weird is that the horse doesn't seem connected to the ground. The ground looks like it's high dry grass, so the lower part of the horse should disappear in the grass. Since it looks like the horse is a magical or spectral apparition is seems appropriate that it isn't, but then it should probably be floating above the grass.

Also, given the size of the brushstrokes low in the painting, it suggests that the horse is the size of a fairy; there aren't too much elements in the painting that can give the proper scale, so I'm unsure of the effect you wanted to achieve regarding that.

The two things give a mysterious feeling, but also a bit confusing. If you're going for entertainment, it should probably be a bit easier to understand.

:)

Thank you very much for your feedback!

I did not use lasso tool although it is one of my favorite tool to sketch things in Photoshop, it was the first time I tried something on Krita, I simply did not know how to in Krita. I discovered it later and think it is very useful in Krita too. I have not tried to tweek my brushes settings for the moment, I will certainly try for my next picture!

The basis of the golden flowers is made with the so called "FX_splat_starfield" brush, then to add some more glowy effect I used a very large "Airbrush_Pressure" with orange color on a upper layer blended in Addition mode (opacity ~10%).

Actually, I prefer Painting in Krita rather than in Photoshop, Krita is sooooo a pleasure to use! Maybe the only thing I am missing for the moment is the Photoshop "piece" tool. My workflow is basically the same, I did not felt lost when I tried Krita.

You are perfectly right for the weird horse connection with the ground. I did not noticed at the moment. In my mind, the horse is at a "realistic" size. Near the feet of the horse, you can see some kind of white glow, it was actually a try to simulate Global illumination of the horse on the grass, maybe I failed! ;D

Did you notice the kind of foxes? They are supposed to be a little blended in the flowers but I noticed that no one notices them. :D

Oh, I couldn't see the foxes...but then knowing their size, the grass should be about 20cm high, and the horse is then really tiny no?
I'm not sure where the VPs should go since there isn't too much visual clues, but this weird feeling may be what you're after if you want some 'poetic' effect.
I couldn't get what these white things where (admittedly, I didn't try that hard).

If that bothers you, try a different version where you give the viewer enough information to rebuild the perspective. The overall feeling will probably be different but it could be interesting. You seem to have interesting ideas going on, I also liked your other pieces on arttation. It seems that you are pretty confident on the technical side, and on the stylistic side trying to accomplish original things, so some things work and some don't. Maybe it's wrong, anyway, keep exploring.

And thanks for the write-up!

In my mind, the "foxes" are most wolves (for the scale) and foxes (for the color to blend in the floxers). I admit that the scale is very confusing, you got it right I think! :)
I will try to apply your advices on a future version, but for now I will focus on other works, I think it could be good to let rest this picture for a while, to take a really fresh look at the picture, maybe in a few months.

Thank you for pointing the weaknesses of my picture, I really appreciate it!
