Rotoscope animation in Krita

Wed Mar 06, 2019 8:50 am
Hi there!
I recently submitted a tutorial on how I did rotoscoping using Krita and I thought I could show you some reults as well.

The latest video is me floating in space. You can see the video here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nlsh_INFCJE

The raw footage is me sitting and balancing on a table :P The animation is a loop of 133 frames displayed in 12 fps.

It's quite a long animation for me so I got impatient and therefore comprimised the shading of the animation. If I could tame my eagerness to release the video I would have put a little more effort to it.

It took me two days. The main limitation of getting it done sooner is the pain in your hand that occurs after hours of tracing.

In this animation I experimented with some distortion as if it looks like I'm fading away. If you freeze and look at the animation frame by frame I don't think it looks that nice but as a complete animation I think it works.

I also added some effects in the video editing program like the zoom blur in the start. You could do this in Krita but then you would have to do it on every single frame I guess. Not quite as conveniant.

Which brings me to an issue I've been having animating in Krita. I don't know if it's my lack of knowledge or if Krita won't let me, but I would like to be able to make changes to multiple frames at once. Does anybody know if this is possible?

I hope this gives you some ideas.

I saw your tutorial and it was interesting and well made, so thank you for that. That's a nice 'floating in space' effect you made and I can imnagine the stress on your hand after all that tracing. It does take a long time to make good animations so take it easy and take your time over it.

As far as I can tell, it's not possible to apply changes, like filters, to a range of frames; you can only do that to an individual frame (unless I was doing it wrong when I tried). However, you can apply filter masks to an animated layer in the Layers Docker and that will be applied to every frame in the animation. I suppose you could cut an animation up to apply effects to different sections but that would get complicated. You can apply more than one filter layer to an animated layer but it takes longer and longer to refresh the animation cache.

Something you might like to try is applying an Edge Detection filter as a filter layer (the Sobel option seems to give good results) which gives an effect similar to rotoscoping but much more detailed, if perhaps too intense, but a bit of pre-filtering (Gaussian ?) might help with that.

As a quick example, here's an animation I made some time ago: https://i.imgur.com/EJBCfaf.gif?1

I've now applied a Sobel edge detection filter layer to the image layer: https://i.imgur.com/G7schxP.gif

They should play nicely in your browser. (I uploaded them as animated .gif but Imgur has converted them to .mp4, to save space I assume.)

Please show us whatever you come up with and good luck :)

Thanks, Ahab!

Definitely some interesting ideas that I will have to try out. And thanks for that Layers docker-tip. Didn't know that :P
