Original artwork by Tyson Tan - of course. Brush+Palette logo from Krita.
I've been meaning to try this technique for some time and the Krita 4.2 splash screen seemed to be a very good subject for it. The original is 850 x 530 but I scaled it to 640 x 400 for this post. I tried to upload a .mp4 to Imgur but it didn't work so I uploaded an animated .gif, which they convert to .gifv (notice the banding in the background gradient). Animated at 15 fps to reduce the amount of work needed. I had fun doing it and I learned a lot.

That's very cool, quite a clever way to animate a still illustration, well done

Thank you for your kind comment. The animation itself is not too difficult (the text is quite easy) but can be tedious. The rest is technical organisation.
The most difficult task was deciding which parts of the original artwork should be separated and isolated into 'elements' and then manually producing those elements for use as animated layers (using animated transparency masks). Tyson Tan's artwork for 4.2 seemed to be a really good choice as soon as I saw it. I recommend that you try something like it one day |
